Royal Show opens for last time

The decline of the farming industry has been blamed for the demise of a 170-year-old tradition as the Royal Show opened its gates for the last time.

...............

"Whereas if you go back to the 1980s, when probably a quarter of a million people came through the show ground on the four days that it's run, that's come down to 120,000 or so.

"In those days, there were 130-140,000 farmers in the UK, actually owning farms and managing and tenanting farms; today that's probably back down to 50 or 60,000."

Last time I went to one of these types of agricultural show, a few years ago, they seem heavily commercialised with endless serried ranks of 'usual suspect' corporate events stands. Hardly a tractor in sight.

Very sad indeed, I'll cycle up at the weekend & enjoy the day for the last time :(

My local agricultural showground has been gradually swallowed up by housing estates.

Bad move. Agriculture is going to come back in a big way.

I've got a feeling there might be an agricultural bubble waiting to burst. I've seen an awful lot of brand new agricultural equipment being delivered on the back of low-loaders, out on the roads, in recent months. Looks like it could be like BMW X5s except with even chunkier tyres.

This was it's exact demise. My Dad is a Farmer and the Royal Show used to be an important date every year, overtime it become mostly food halls, craft and clothing stalls. It got to the point about 8 years ago when my Dad could not go to the show without it being seen as an out and out jolly because the agricultural side of it had declined so much. Very sad and shows how destructive the consumerism culture has been.
