Boy, 14, Banned From School For Having Moustache

A boy aged 14 has been banned from school for having a moustache.

Akaash Iqbal was told it was against the strict uniform policy at Manchester Academy and he wouldn't be allowed back until he shaved it off.

But his father Asif Mahmood branded the move 'nonsense' and insisted he was too young to begin shaving.

Mr Mahmood said: 'They told us the moustache was not part of the uniform. I thought it was a joke at first.

'What about Sikh children whose religion tells them not to shave? Are they not allowed to go there?

'I'm honestly staggered by it. I had a call telling me to have a razor on standby, shave him when he got home and send him back.

'I wasn't going to do that. He's just a growing boy. By the time he's 16 he'd have stubble all over his face.'

Akaash, who is in Year Ten, said he and his family were embarrassed by what had happened.

He said: 'I was walking down the corridor to registration and one of the teachers took me into a room. I was made to stay there for an hour.

They then told me that my moustache was against the uniform rules and told me to go home and shave it.

'I'm not shaving it at my age. It will ruin my face. I've got a GCSE to sit and am taking the rest of them next year but I can't go to school. It's just not nice. I feel left out.'

The Academy, in Moss Side area of the city, is known to have a strict uniform policy which even staff are expected to comply with.

But an academy spokeswoman said it was a standard expectation that children are clean shaven.

She said: 'We do not believe it is appropriate to comment on individual students within the Academy.

'The Academy has established rules on personal appearance and dress which students are expected to adhere to.'

This country is full of idiots in high places.

he'd be fine, except his son has clearly been shaving the rest of his facial hair off but keeping the 'tache, so the religion argument is a load of crap (as usual).

Though given his dad seems to be a Bolloywood star wannabe, I do wonder whether the story is just to get the dad meeja exposure. (check out the stupid chunky rings, the mullet extraordinaire, the 'smock' etc...]

If you need to shave at 14 you need to shave. Simple.

+1 to the school.

Exactly. My school (admittedly we're talking 35 years ago) also had rules about length of hair. They would have done the same thing like a shot.

This is a no brainer - only getting media attention because its the silly season and they're too lazy/stupid to find any real stories.

I hate moustaches!!!!!!

What is it about dictators and moustaches

And why hasn't Brown got one?

Mandelson used to have one and he shaved it off

I think I shall make a new law demanding that all socialists grow moustaches so we can spot them in advance!

He has very neatly trimmed sideburns and as mentioned no beard.

This reminds me of the '14 year old' at my sons school. He is an asylum seeker from Afghanistan and has a full on hairy chest and almost a full beard according to my son. I saw him around a few weeks ago and if I didnt knpw he was 15 I could have sworn he was early twenties.

To be fair, it doesn't look that bad.

He just looks like a kid with a terrible tache

Nothing wrong with quality facial hair, and it's certainly not a purely socialist thing. Von Mises had one.

Can somebody tell the dad to comb his hair and get rid of the Elizabeth Duke jewellry while they're at it?

The kid will be devastated. I bet he's the one who always gets asked to get the ciders in at the pub...

I hate facial hair fascists.

Why shouldn't he have a tash? Those of us with thick dark hair that grows back quickly get irritated to hell by having to shave every morning.

How is slicing skin and hair from you face every day natural?

Also, why does nobody ever have the balls to ask women with facial hair to shave/dye/wax it? I seem to remember enough female teachers that had better tach's than the males.

And whilst I'm having a moan, where on earth did the phrase "Never trust a man with a beard" come from? Most folk that say it, seem to be quite happy to celebrate Christmas, the alleged birth date of the most famous facially haired chap of all time!

I didn't realise Santa had his birthday at Christmas. That must really suck - work 1 day a year, every year, year in year out, rain or shine, but every time your birthday. Nightmare.
