SMAC67
Ah yes, the incomprehensible fear of the unknown strikes again. We’re our own down fall, we’ll be wiped out, blah blah. So what! Why this care for our own self-importance? Well over 90% of species that have been on this planet have been wiped out and they were all pretty much one with nature far more than we ever were, so lets just do it, why the worry? If we don’t, the planets going to do it for us anyway. I’m afraid the odds just aren’t that good people. link Ok then, please feel free to take a shotgun to your head, throw yourself off a bridge, or stand in front of an on-rushing train, you may feel better. You are correct that all existence is transient, but that doesn't mean we have to accelerate our own, or anyone else's demise. See what I mean about death cult Steve, it is inculcated in people from birth. Unfortunately they plan to take me and every living thing on the planet with them. Like the lunatics who kill their families before turning the shotgun on themselves. Death is a natural cycle in life, unfortunately we have given up on life and instead decided that our death cult is the thing to preserve. Watch how we fetishise death with our maudlin antics over the demise of Micheal Jackson. We are sick and we don't even know it, which makes us insane. Except Injin of course, if you look closely you will find that he isn't actually standing on planet earth, but rather floating above it. Guest theboltonfury
We starve alone or we burn along with the rest of the biosphere. Some choice Steve, you're a lovely guy but I reckon you'd have enough depressive abilities to make me feel really hacked off if a very fruity Kelly Brook presented herself to me demanding my fullest attention. SMAC67
At least you understand the source of our power, it comes from burning dead things, so I guess we could move onto burning live things. The unemployed eh, is that because they are more useful than our elites?

sundance_kid
You don't appear to understand my point. What exactly is your fear for? It’s not a death cult , it’s peoples irrational fear. It’s a completely bogus, ridiculous point, as if we’re so self important that we can measure the planets well being against if we did or didn’t actually exist. It’s a bogus argument. A damp squid. There is no such measure. The planet doesn’t care for starters, and secondly to think you can have some sort of influence over your descendants lives. They won’t give it a second thought and neither do the vast majority of the extinct species now buried under your feet.

They won’t give it a second thought and neither do the vast majority of the extinct species now buried under your feet. It is a very powerful death cult and if you do not join you will be removed from the planet. So your choice is join us and die or oppose us, and die. Pretty irrational. The planet might not care, and God might not care, but since the only objective of life is life itself, living creatures are free to object. Of course you'll want those killed. If you think you have no effect on your descendants lives then you are so far in the thrall of the death cult and so far gone that no amount of "rational" thought will alter your programming. Put simply you are addicted to your death cult you call civilisation in the same way the characters in Irvine Welsh's Trainspotting were hooked on heroin. You do not understand the power of the death cult because to an abused animal the abuse is what passes for normalcy. Species are born species die, but our death cult will see to it that nothing lives and that we are left with a barren worthless rock floating in space. Choose life. In the evening you sit around your camp fire burning sustainable willow coppice singing 'imagine' or 'all we need is love', your long flowing hair blows in the gentle breeze, untidy, fill of twigs, uncleaned for years (cleaning is just plain silly when we know it will clean itself over time and not require any filthy detergent). Then after taking your final gulp of mead your turn to your hairy wife and suggest you make love as nature intended. The product of your love making thus produces offspring, who skip and play in the wild flower covered meadow all day with gay abandon, the kids are free to express themselves in any way they wish without fear of chastisement (basically they are annoying little sh1ts with no discipline), to chastise would inhibit their development............. Feel free to add some more to Steve's world, or Steve maybe you could add some more. Whilst adding to the story remember this, your computer is using energy produced from trees that are millions of years old, the plastics in your computer are made from black gold, the metals were mined from a large open cast mine somewhere in the tropics and the silcon was dug from a pit that will be backfilled and used for landfill muwaahaaaa

bogbrush
I don't see what Steve is getting into a state about. All this fuss over peak oil, well if this stuff is there in abundance then we're laughing! We can carry on doing all the stuff the modern world makes possible, like electing socialist governments, which he must be happy about. Without comfort and available energy all that goes into the bin. Still, you can't have everything can you? Forget the AGW nonsense, that'll be ditched soon anyway. But if you are into that particular bag then read the article because it's much better for that, if you feel that way. The lights can go back on, the people breathing smoke from indoor fires can have electric ones and stop poisoning themselves, and industrialists can do what they do best. Everyone wins. Refreshing to say the least that some people are highlighting the BS. Not saying Steve is wrong though. Just saying we are being BSed to a complete state of idiotic paranoia. So where is the end of the world going to come from? Oh yes, it's peak oil Oh no, it's global warming No you silly, it's a new ice age caused by a breakdown of the gulf stream It's not because of the gulf stream, it's the sunspots you silly, there are no more sunspots Wait a minute, I thought Iran was going to nuke us first Or is it developing economies that will cause a global nuclear world war over food No, it's over water Naaah, it's the CERN that will get us all by creating a black hole with their next experiment But what about a meteor that is bound to hit the earth someday? Or the next supervolcano, it is overdue, we know that No, it's inflation, it will take us back to the stone age No, it's deflation, it will take us back to the stone age A1N1 will get us first though or bird flu or some engineered virus created by some evil consipracy hell bent on killing us all Tut tut, the end of the world will be caused by the year 2012 (but we're not sure how) This is BS I have heard or read from seemingly serious people only in the last 12 months. We are being scared out of our wits. Are you guys seeing a pattern? WTF is this? Anybody feeling like we are being played?

I read a book by Dale Carnegie called 'How to stop worrying and start living'. I think I'd been reading this forum too much at the time! It starts up with the quote along the lines of '90% of the things we worry about never happen'
