Buying Gold Coins

Recommended Posts

Hello All

New to this but have been pricing up one ounce coins and have a query that someone out there is sure to know.

I've checked the price at Chards and Baird and Co for one ounce coins..both priced similar at around £640 for individual 1 oz Britannias.

Then I've checked Hatton Garden Metals and, not like for like, but Krugerrrands and American Eagles are going fo £606 on their website.

Why the £35/coin difference?

As I say I'm brand new to this so am I missing something blindingly obvious?

Neill

Britannias are shinier, and there are fewer of them around. Plus Digger's CGT bonus.

I have used coininvestdirect, weighton coin wonders, and chard, all very good service.

HGM seem keener on prices but the difference varies day-to-day.

Brittanias (and Pandas and new sovereigns) are favoured for their asthetics and people will pay extra for them.

Some weird coins are not widely traded and can go cheaply on ebay. I bought a Peruvian gold coin for less than scrap price including postage. Mind you I wouldnt be able to tell if it was fake.

hgm is a pick n mix, they don't know what stock they have until about lunch when they have opened all of the post and seen what has been sent in.

all a bit wishy washy for me and with that sort of turn around I don't know how well coins are being checked/tested.

Someone who collects sovereigns advised me to buy off HGM, take out the good or rare ones and sell the worn ones back to Chards.

Not checking the coins can work in your favour

interesting idea, do chards usually pay enough that you don't end up out of pocket?
