Estate agency hit by vandals

6:19pm Monday 22nd June 2009

By Kathie Griffiths »

A property agent has been left with a £10,000 repair bill after two attacks on her business premises in Bradford.

Police are investigating after windows and signs were smashed at Gables Properties in Great Horton Road.

Owner Rachel Flint believes the attacks, which occurred within a 48-hour period, are linked.

But the 37-year-old, who runs the business with her 56-year-old husband Adrian, said they will not be forced out of the area.

“They’re not frightening us and were staying put,†she said.

“We’ve got no other issues with anyone. In this line of business you have cross words from time-to-time with people not paying rent but that’s not what this is about.

“It’s taking it too far. It seems to be just jealousy that we’re doing well.â€

Mrs Flint said before the attacks, a To Let sign was ripped up from a garden at a property in Beldon Road nearby and smashed through a ground window.

The first attack on the premises happened in daylight at about 3.20pm on Saturday when CCTV cameras caught a balaclava-clad suspect smashing the front windows with what looked like a claw hammer.

A LCD television behind the window was also smashed with shards of glass flying into the shop, wrecking laminate flooring – nothing was stolen.

Mrs Flint said: “The police were told and we made the premises as safe as it could be while the insurers got to work but then in the early hours of today, someone attacked our sign above the business, they used a massive brick – I’ve still got it as evidence.

“The sign’s all dented and the lights behind it are smashed.

“This has all cost us a fortune. It might be Wednesday, even Thursday, before we can open again but we’ll do it.â€

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said two cases of criminal damage were being investigated in Great Horton Road on Saturday.

As well as the estate agents’ windows, a newsagents premises had also been attacked about 20 minutes earlier.

Mrs Flint said: “We still believe it’s all a direct targeting of us. We’re convinced of it.â€

Anyone who witnessed the attacks or has any information about them should call police on 0845 6060606.
