June 18 (Bloomberg) -- Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling, signaling a clash with Prime Minister Gordon Brown over spending, said the U.K. government must make tough decisions to curb the budget deficit.

“We must live within our means,†Darling told bankers at the annual Mansion House dinner in London last night. “There are tough choices ahead. I will continue to do whatever is necessary to ensure sustainable public finances.â€

Darling’s call came as Brown emphasized the need to lift spending and protect state-funded schools and hospitals. With an election due in the next year, the prime minister sees government support for the economy as a dividing line with the Conservative opposition, which says he can’t afford it.

Listen bankers, we've spent a tonne of money bailing you guys out. Now it's time for some tough choices. We are going to have to tax to death the working population to ensure we live within our means.

Time for Darling to resign, saying:

BROWN Must Go !!

Yes, I'm beginning to think The Badger might be the only one who can save us now, since the rest of them bottled it. I see occasional signs of integrity there (once you look past the tax-dodging, expense-claiming and war-supporting, not to mention the see-no-evil approach to the debt bubble in the first place).

Does anyone else feel they have run out of ways to express their exasperation?

I think we should all grease up and swim the channel. Or something.
