Buying To Let (but Only Letting Out One Bedroom)

Recommended Posts

Lets say I buy a 2 bedroom flat, and I want to let one bedroom out. It is obvious possible to do it through connections/gumtree etc. But are there any more organised/safer options, such as going through estate agents? Thank you

I have used spareroom.co.uk and found 2 great lodgers. However I do think I was just lucky as friend also used them and got a female alcoholic who she once found naked and drunk at the bottom of the stairs.

Always best to stick to 3 or 6 month rental/lodging agreement with housemate just in case they are terrible. Lodgers generally want a shorter stay as ideally they want to move in with mates and as rents are coming down all the time, renting in the owners place is not really ideal. The renters I had were foreign and basically wanted somewhere safe to start off, advice on how the UK rental system works, cultural issues and where and how to find flats to eventually move to. Suited both parties and have ended up staying friends with them although they have moved on.
