London 2012 Olympics: £1.1bn cost but just 115 jobless locals taken on

By Tom Pettifor 10/06/2009

Only 115 local people have been taken off the dole to build the £1.1billion Olympic Park - despite vows the 2012 Games would aid poor boroughs.

Ministers promised the Games would regenerate five "Olympic boroughs" in East London, which include some of the most deprived neighbourhoods in the country.

Of course. There was a dome to regenerate East London. Then an Olympics. What do you suppose is next?

The rest of the country - and especially those Northern cities that get passionate about their "sport" in a way London doesn't - can get stuffed.

The regeration of east manchester for the commonwealth was the same.

Oh hang on, there's a giant walmart opposite it and a mcdonalds. Bound to be some local employment there.

And lots of financial cleansing went on too.

Yes, but they lied!!

Didnt they just......

Please note, all non-cynics on this:

The olympics is not about grass roots sport (google Eastway cycle track or london swimming pools olympics etc to see this)

It's not about jobs for locals (see article here)

It's not about local communities (google allotments stratford olympics)

There does seem to be a case that there has been some asset (e.g land) grabbing and personal enrichment by Coe and his buddies. Again, plenty on this been published.

Plus a lot of ego-boosting willywaggling by politicos, Coe etc.
