North Korea today said it would use nuclear weapons in a "merciless offensive" if provoked — its latest bellicose rhetoric apparently aimed at deterring any international punishment for its recent atomic test blast.

The tensions emanating from Pyongyang are beginning to hit nascent business ties with the South: a Seoul-based fur manufacturer became the first South Korean company to announce Monday it was pulling out of an industrial complex in the North's border town of Kaesong.

AFAIK North Korea don't have the tech to make nuclear warheads, so they'd have to deliver it by hand.

This bit suprised me

The complex, which opened in 2004, is a key symbol of rapprochement between the two Koreas but the goodwill is evaporating quickly in the wake of North Korea's nuclear test on May 25 and subsequent missile tests.

Some 40,000 North Koreans are employed at the zone, making everything from electronics and watches to shoes and utensils, providing a major source of revenue for the cash-strapped North. The park combines South Korean technology and management expertise with cheap North Korean labor.

Super Kim!

Rough translation of the commentary:

“You lead Super Kim through his super world, Super North Korea! We’ll start in your palace. Yum! Expensive imported brandy. Oh dear … hungry children. Time for your special trick: ignore them and continue. They love you [child drops dead]! Oh dear … international negotiators. They want to bargain with you … time for your special trick … But now you get your mega-bonus, and now you’re Super Atom Kim! Only one enemy to go – UN sanctions. Duck: ‘Hello Super Kim – you can’t import any more luxury goods or weapons.’ Is this too easy? OK – other countries had an even worse enemy – the Americans. But if you have the bomb you need fear no-one – that is well known. So now you’re in multiplayer mode with Iran, Sudan and lots of nasty terrorists. All of them have the bomb now. And if any of your friends don’t have it, you can share it with them!

I wouldn't worry - N. Korea is a dictatorship, and a prime requirement for a successful dictator is an acute sense of self-preservation.

Kim Jong-il will only provoke the USA if he believes that he has a very good chance of winning. So far, the odds seems to be stacked 3000-nukes-to-1 against him. :)

One, which they will actually need to build - seeing as they almost certainly exhausted their arsenal with that test the other week - then find a method of delivering as it's probably the size of a small house.

This has been done on another thread. NK is not going to nuke anyone, even if they had the capacity to. If they tried they would be erased from history within minutes.

Aside form dirty bombs, they can't really do an awful lot.

Doesn't really matter if it's kim jong il,bin laden or any other crackpot with wmd.

I have a feeling should something like that happen on american soil, uncle sam will instantly obliterate EVERYBODY they perceive to be a target in one fell swoop.

with something like 5000 nukes in their bunkers it could be an incredibly short war.

With respect, I'd guess that the specific flavour of crackpot is significant.

Bin Liner is motivated by religion, as is my namesake, David Koresh, the Falun Gong etc. etc. The sigificant point is that they don't mind killing themselves as a result of their terrorist acts, as long as they take the infidel with them. In other words, the principle of mutually assured destruction (you won't nuke me because you know that I'll nuke you back, and we'll both end up dead) doesn't apply and is irrelevant.

But self-preservation is a motivation for Kim Jong-Il, Chavez, the Burmese junta, etc. etc. They are autocracies, but not theocracies. The cartoon I posted above is right, I think - he sees nukes as a bargaining chip rather than something he has any serious intention of using in anger. The only possible exception to that would be if anyone does make a serious attempt to depose him and he feels that he's got nothing to lose.

Yes. There have been rumours that Kim is terminally ill. Maybe he has nothing to lose already?

MACAU, China, June 9 (UPI) -- The eldest son of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il says he's not interested in leading the country as his father's successor.

Kim Jong Nam told Japan's TV Asahi in Macau that he doesn't want to follow in his father's footsteps and has no interest at all in politics, CNN reported Tuesday.

"Personally, I am not interested in this issue (succession)," he reportedly told the Japanese broadcaster. "Sorry, I am not interested in the politics."

Kim Jong Il was widely reported to have suffered a stroke last year. In April, he sparked speculation that a succession process in underway in the secretive Communist nation by naming the youngest of his three sons, Kim Jong Un, to the country's powerful National Defense Commission, along with his brother-in-law who presumably would act as a regent until the youngest Kim comes of age, CNN said.

"I hear that news in the media," Kim Jong Nam told TV Asahi. "I think it's true … however, it is my father's decision. So once he decides, we have to support him."

The oldest son of Kim Jong Il, North Korea’s supreme leader, has given the first confirmation that his youngest brother is to inherit power in the isolated dictatorship, even as its Government is threatening pre-emptive nuclear attack against any infringements of its “dignity and sovereigntyâ€.

Way to take rejection badly, it was never going to pass to Kim Jong Nam, it was , Kim Jong Un because Kim Jong Il said the others were weak.

If NK can't get a nuclear warhead in 6 months they have failed IMO.

Bloody hell, it's like an episode of Eastenders over at Kim's place. Will the son be any worse or any better I wonder?

But the rest of the North Korean leadership certainly would. Personality cults only go so far, and generally start to break down when they stop delivering the goodies for the small army of yes men needed to maintain them. Even Hitler discovered that towards the end. One would hope that the self preservation instinct of Kim's politburo (or whatever his senior management team is actually called) would kick in if he made any serious attempt to press the button. After all, they're not working in the belief that they have 72 virgins to look forward to.

Don't bet on it. They have working nuclear weapons.

They will deliver weapons on target via missiles or suicide attacks. There is a good chance they will attack thought tunnels into S.Korea.
