Refusing To Fund Mps Unethical Expenses...

Recommended Posts

I can't imagine that the courts would dare to use the weight of the law against anyone taking a stand in this manner once the press got hold of it - would it force these thieving scumbags into a corner and make them leave ahead of their intended departure?

Withholding income tax I could understand.

Council tax won't bother your MP or the Govt any; it'd just hit your local council. If your MP is of a different party to the local council, he'd likely find it most amusing.

Actually, you are right - populism and ethics never had anything to do with the decision made by judges. That said though, I still think that it would put unbearable pressure on an MP if one of their constituents was imprisoned because of this issue and the press and general public knew that the constituent would pay the bill the moment the MP stands down.

I agree to an extent but Council Tax is an easier tax to 'make a mistake' with - just as the MPs 'made a mistake' with their expenses. And, as you say, it wouldn't hit central Govt anyway, rather it would be about the principle of withholding money from the public sector in a way that would be easy for the public to join in and in a way that the press could latch on.

I'm not even necessarily advocating it, to be honest, just interested to gauge how far people would go to if there was a way they could collectively bite back.
