weemee
Poor lass! Shocking- this government are mental. For those who have actually worked and contributed (i.e. drones) we get nothing. If you do nothing they can't help you quick enough! I claimed JSA for 1 month (the only time in my life) and am now being chased to pay it back!! I give up.... barabbas
One way the government could fill the black hole in their finances would be to charge people for being unemployed, rather than hand out money.

davidhpc
because she cant! but she didnt bleat about it she accepts she has to pay it and wants to work!! don't get you. she'll now get her rent paid by housing benefit. obviously when she was working she didn't pay her rent and got in arrears. she got her job anyway at the end but started moaning about the wages. I think you are just sticking up for her because you fancy her. If it was a spotty bloke you would be calling for a cut in his allowance. porca misèria
The minimum is, in theory, £50/week plus 100% of rent and council tax - which can put you ahead of someone on moderate income having to pay their own tax and rent. Plus a few benefits like free NHS treatment. In reality, you may be lucky to get that much. When I ran out of money and was able to sign on in 2002, they wouldn't pay the full £360/month rent, so £20/week of my £53 (as it was then for a middle-aged person) went into the rent. I was still able to bring my bank account back into the black, and I took advantage of the freebies to go to the dentist and optician. The worst was yet to come, and is the real gotcha: never ever give up the dole without a secure escape route. I got a contract in autumn 2002 that netted about US$8k, and I signed off. By mid-2003 that money had run out, but I couldn't sign on again: they decided I'd earned too much (despite most of it having gone on one thing alone - rent). That was the period of real poverty, which lasted until early 2004 when ADSL arrived and I started to get more regular income.
huw
she said £15 a week goes on rent arrears, so she didn't pay all the bills. She delayed signing on and borrowed/fell into arrears. Natural human pride, but unwise IMO. However she could cut out the TV (£5 a week? How come?) and the travel card, tripling her weekly living budget to £15, and £10/week for one person on elec/gas is hardly frugal IMO. I find it hard to believe that she's living on 4 quid a week for food. Its impossible and she hasn't been rooting around in bins for half eaten sandwiches because she looked immaculate. jammo
she said £15 a week goes on rent arrears, so she didn't pay all the bills. You are correct. That would have quadrupled her food/transport allowance that the government has deemed acceptable for a single person to live on for a week, which currently stands at the amazing £5 mark. Is it that this allowance was meant for those still living with the parents? She's clearly not doing; the state benefits for the single person in her situation is barbaric. And not everyone can live with the parents forever/ or wants to become a sink estate baby factory unfortunately. There has to be an inbetween option surely? A couple more years of that, and she would be one of the above, or a crack.. Socialism showing it's ugly face. And she's right to highlight it. Couldn't do that now (cheapo pasta up from 12p to 41p/packet). But £2/week still works at Tesco prices.
davidhpc
I think there are a lot of people living on £50 a week after rent, I spend about £50 a week, I've lived on less too. I'm pretty sure she would get council tax paid on that income too. It didn't all ring quite true to me. £50 a week is OK to get by while you are looking for work. She'll know to keep up with the rent next time she gets a job.

She chooses to have a TV, a travel card, and £30 monthly mobile phone contract (maybe she can't get out of that, but her attitude seems to be that she needs it to look for work). Guest BoomBoomCrash
She's actually better off than someone working full time for minimum wage. Edited April 25, 2009 by BoomBoomCrash
Dead Spider
"She sets aside money for gas and electricity, her television licence and her arrears, as well as her £30 monthly mobile phone bill." and yet : "Without the phone, job-hunting would be impossible, she says. Now that she is unemployed, she no longer has a landline as she cannot afford it." Land line is cheaper than mobile methinks . (or am I incorrect ?) huw
Depends if you are ringing a lot of mobiles. Job-hunting in salons and restaurants would involve ringing land lines I'd have thought.
