1869 Black Friday

Recommended Posts

I kep stumbling across references to the 1869 Gould/Fisk Black Friday, when apparently bankers were dragged out of their offices and hung from lampposts.

Wikipedia mentions the Gould/Fisk scandal which forcibly reminds us that lobbyists nearly always escape scot-free, but not a whisper of ropes or necks.

It all sounds really juicy, but is tantalisingly difficult to trace to source. It it all just urban myth, or do any HPC posters have any verifiable facts on it ?

After the South Sea bubble burst in 1720, those responsible had their estates forcibly liquidated and divvied out for compensation, and a proposal was written up that the responsible bankers be tied up in sacks of snakes and thrown into the Thames. Fortunately, common sense prevailed and people decided that it was cruel to drown the snakes.

Coincidentally, the Chancellor of the Exchequer and his parliamentary crony's were impeached for their roles and died broken, disgraced men.

I'm sure Dr. Gordon Brown, a PhD in history, is well aware of the outcome of said bubble.

it sounds like the story is - these blokes used inside information on government gold sales to profit in the gold market. the government found out what they were doing and bankrupted them.

sadly today the government is less honest and would probably agree to let it happen as long as they get a piece of the action

ive said it before and ill say it again!

id like to film a remake of a famous pulp fiction scene, with a banker, bruce willis and a guillotine.

picture this Fred is found fvking the general public up the ****. and after Fred and his friends have buggered his victims to within an inch of there lifes, the hero enters the room and chops their heads clean off! sweet! the following conversation ensues.

Tax payer: Whose guillotine is this?

Butch: It's a chopper, baby.

Tax payer: Whose chopper is this?

Butch: It's Fred's.

Tax payer: Who's Fred?

Butch: Fred's dead, baby. Fred's dead.
