CynicAl
the charcoal guy? Yes, he built it to live in as his planning permission would not let him sell it on. The house was a delight to behold.
shippers
I must have missed that one. got a link? He was a genuine woodsman. Lived in the wood and managed it, made charcoal out of the wood. Lived in a shed basically. Got planning permission to build a house within the wood on the proviso he knocked it down when he left or died. Built it entirely himself using renewable materials, and volunteers who wanted to learn the skills. Ended up meeting a woman who moved in and they then had a kid. I imagine he's still there, happy as larry, still making his charcoal. http://www.ben-law.co.uk/
pilchardthecat
Yes, he built it to live in as his planning permission would not let him sell it on.The house was a delight to behold. It's sad in some respects, as it serves as a reminder to all of us in the 'rat race' that there are other, better, kinder ways to live than ours. It's the only one i've watched where i've felt jealous...

It's a bath, I can wash in it. Job Done. Brilliant. Absolutely my favourite, a completely no nonsense guy and a nice place Do I remember correctly that he got the solar panels from the "big brother" house? What a contrast. BLOW FLY
£400K for the house and they estimated £1000 per sq m to renovate and there were 440 sq m thats £840k........ And they managed to do that by selling a "small flat" in Clapham......! Perfect example of craziness of last few years (as filming started in 2006) or other money from else where? ccc
To be fair to Mcloud he classes this as his favourite. Best thing about it is the fact the woodsman can't even sell it. It is his HOME, and nothing else. I think it should be the emblem of this site.
dreamOn120k
Just watched the end, as usual the final result was inspirational but oh god the husband. Why did she marry such an empty head.
hellsbells
I don't believe for a moment that that house came in at only 10% over budget. An unexpected £60K on groundworks and £26K on a bat roost, months of delays, specialist glazing, specialist steelwork, lots of bling and only 10% over????? I think not. Yeah there seemed to be loads of editing done in that program, apparently filming started in 2006, never really quizzed them on the finances or kept up with date and time lines. Actually from his website that I posted it seems as if he generates an income from showing people around the wood, and the home. Now that's not quite as "purist" I suppose. But I guess if it inspires more people to try and challenge planning law to enable them to build similar sustainable homes to live in. From my recall of the programme he couldn't even pass it on as an inheritable asset. I really, really fancy putting my name forward next year to be one of the two "interns" to be chosen to learn woodman's skills for 4 months with him. Don't know where that would lead. I guess it would make you at least more self reliant in all sorts of ways.

Why not ? Life is too short to worry about 4 months out of a measly year. I once worked for 3 days as an apiarist. I was done about 40 times if you are wondering. Painful - but worth it.
