Mikhail Liebenstein
This is really bad news, as Corus is the sort of firm we need to see growing. We could lose a 5000 employees from Goldman Sachs and it wouldn't make a blind bit of difference, in fact it would remove a parasite from the economy, but real economies need real innovative manufacturers. The Masked Tulip
According to a mate he thinks Llanwern will be shut completely - about 2,000 work there - and that other plants in the north of England will go. That would leave Port Talbot and Trostre as PT is pretty state of art. Thousands of sub-contractors work for Corus in South Wales - between 6,000 and 10,000 so big knock-on affect in Wales if anything happens re job cuts in Corus down here. Exactly this is very bad news for the real Welsh economy. There are some really skilled people in this field, and they shouldn't be wasted by either going on the dole or getting hoovered up into Government non jobs that seem to be infesting parts of Wales at the momement. True. I was just reading today that the public sector makes up over 60% of the Welsh economy; events like this just skew the balance even further away from the private sector. sleepless
Don't Tata own Corus - but haven't asked for gov bailout or assistance as far as I'm aware. Don't Tata also own Jaguar, and asked for gov money but haven't got it. Maybe I'm putting 2 +2 and getting
Errol
Surely countries like India and china can make all this stuff far cheaper? I don't see why any business would employ manual workers in Europe/the Uk. You can get cheaper workers elsewhere.

Converted Lurker
BBC now announcing 2000 of the job losses will be in Britain. is that a 'record' for job losses from a single company? This is bad.
ralphmalph
Just to put this in perspective Corus employ 24,000 people in the UK and 2000 unfortunately will loss thier job. In the 80's 3,700 in one town Consett lost thier job plus tens of thousands of others in the Steel industry.

The Masked Tulip
err modern steel making is as far from labour intensive manual work as you can get. Port Talbot is one of the most modern steelworks in the World. It has far less staff now than it used to but then many thousands are now contractors rather than staff. You still don't need expensive human labour.
