Requiem For A Dream (spanish Ghost Town)

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. Here is a video of a ghost town in Spain, Soto del Henares. It's unbelievable how many properties have been built in Spain in the last few years, there is a huge oversupply.

Some "ghost towns" like this one are starting to appear all over the country...

I guess the planners went to communist Russia and liked what they saw!

I was going to say ... it looks like Chernobyl after the reactor melted.

Good grief. I knew it was bad but that is epic.

The architecture looks strangely familiar doesnt it. Perhaps in the future it will have a name. I suggest 21st century folly.

Thanks for the welcome guys.

The video was taken by one poster in HPC's spanish brother burbuja.info

Well, I'll introduce myself, I'm a spaniard living in the UK for the last 3 years, and a fan of both HPC and burbuja.info, I'm following both bubbles with a lot of attention.

There's been videos like that doing the rounds on you tube for a while, usually dubbed with arabic music.

That seems like a new one though. I think it's the massive out of town apartment block area near Madrid. Some foreign buyers been 'had' but actually mostly Spanish, causing protests, anger, etc.

There were stories of it in this country, where blocks were put up and left empty, never intended to have anyone living there at all, since the profit would be made purely on price appreciation. Once sold I suppose the buyer would sit on them and wait until they had appreciated further and then sell again, and so on. Architecture just didn't come into it, boxes with windows were fine, get them up as fast as possible.

Never thought someone would try it with a whole city though.

Welcome to the forum.

Interesting video.

I am shocked at the sheer size of this ghost town.

Here's a BBC report on another ghost town just south of Madrid:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7584097.stm

I'm English but I've been living in Madrid for 5 years and couldn't believe the bubble here. I thought the UK was corrupt, but the way local councils and developers have contrived to keep prices high in Spain, through "schemes to help first time buyers onto the property ladder" by subsidizing this over priced junk is beyond belief.

800,000 houses per year built during the boom years in Spain, UK could barely manage 200,000. Spain is 2/3 the population of the UK too.

Epic fail, they will be bulldozed without a doubt.
