Kurt Barlow
Heres something for the taxpayers of Cambridge - the Salary scale for the Chief Exec and Directors at Cambridge City Council. The lower two bands are top end Managers. Meanwhile they are probably trying to shave 50p an hour off the street cleaners wages....... Take note this was 2 years ago so you can add another 5% Edited January 23, 2009 by Kurt Barlow

Sack the CEX and 4 Directors and put the one decent Director in charge. That would save around £700k for starters and no one in Cambridge would notice any difference for the absence of the CMT Dream team Dream being the operative word

Restructure the ******* and make the five of them reapply for the one remaining job! Cambridge really is a Rotten Borough There is a really unhealthy clique of Executive Councillors and Senior Officers at Cambridge City. . Not all heads of Service or Directors are in it as some do a reasonable job. The Clique are the faux non jobbers who ass lick the Exec councillors. Their political processes are most undemocratic but the opposition are powerless to get it changed Edited January 23, 2009 by Kurt Barlow
Guest vicmac64
What can you say - words fail me. In fact words are no longer the answer - they just are not listening to the people of the United Kingdom. They are a law unto themselves, they have no respect for the taxpayer, they have no respect for decency or anything other than fleecing the taxpayer. In the lower and middle ranks you will find a lot of good people particularly in the core services the public generally recognise as a real service (Housing, Street cleaning, rubbish collection Building control, Planning, Environmental Health). They are pretty demoralised though as workloads soar, job evaluation cuts pay whilst the upper tier - The Tax Abusers of the Week reward themselves year in year out.

Well in this case its the Liberal Democraps - failed academics, astroturfers, alternative lifstylers (benefits funded) Many of the labour opposition (forget national politics) are reasonable people from real backgrounds. There is also a good conservative and a reasonable independant - who was hounded out of the Lib Dems for Hetrosexism by virtue of saying Cambridge needed more family homes and fewer flats ffs! Any voter in cambridge I would implore to vote tactically for whoever (labour, conservative, Independant) has the best chance of defeating the criminal democrap candidate if you want change. Both labour and conservative are pushing for changes to the political system which would be more democratic. tinker
A few letters hit the Bolton News today (4 in all) over this piece of troughery. Leader of the Council, no-one special and certainly no strategic genius... hobbies include attending meetings and having tea and biscuits. He earns some £40k + expenses for his proper job - Council Leader; has a part time role as Royal Bolton Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Chairman which now pays £41,500 for three days a week; this due to a recent pay increase of £18,500 (80%). I think he's going to need a bigger trough. People aren't happy: and given the economic circumstances it is - how you say in Engleesh - understandable. These people have no idea of the contempt with which they are now held. Bolton News Slap in the face for hospital workers Friday 23rd January 2009 ON reading the article regarding the 80 per cent pay rise for Mr Morris I went apoplectic. How in the present situation can anyone possibly justify this clear slap in the face for all hard working true hospital workers (doctors, nurses etc)? Mr Morris makes a pathetic attempt with his blatant use of spin saying he “insists the Trust, and the Bolton taxpayer, get good value for money.” Really? He then goes on to say: "It is not me that is getting the £18,500 pay rise, it is the role. The job is evaluated and the role has objectives to be fulfilled". OK Mr Morris, what exactly are these objectives? Also what on earth does he mean by saying: “It is often more than three days worth per week.” I would think it should be. Don’t try and kid us Mr Morris, you are receiving the £18,000 rise and no amount of spin can change that. If the job is that crucial why don’t you pack in your council job and its £39,570 wage and put in a full week? Maybe we may find a bit more sincerity in your excuses. Also: Extra money is a disgrace Story should have been on the front page No wonder NHS has no money An absolute disgrace, repeated up and down the country. The higher echelons of the public sector have spread like a cancer and need cutting out. It can no longer be overlooked. tinker
I was at a community forum recently where Council Officers made a presentation about the forthcoming Council budget, backed by a mere 3.5% rise in council tax. A question was asked (paraphrasing): 'in light of the impending recession what does the finance officer think about the effect on the budget given the loss of council tax revenue due to unemployment and business rates due to the likely shop closures on the high street?' The response was (again paraphrasing): 'it's OK, the government has promised to make up the shortfalls in that instance.' So there we have it, muggins taxpayer will be taking the hit again. No real attempt to cut costs or anticipate this crisis. Repeat this all over the country, and you can see the public finances getting worse. And still public bodies see fit to award their executives 80% pay increases in this climate. Their contempt of the people holds no bounds. Edit: grammar tweak Edited January 24, 2009 by tinker

The problem with Cambridge it that 25-30% of households are Council tax exempt as they are students - who of course in recent years have switched allegiance from labour to Lib Dem. The tory's have one seat.
chirpy999
Dog , thanks for pointing these people out on a regular basis. When are we going to see the back of these sort of parasites. I am working in local government at the moment and everyone seems to be a manager on good money. Some of the things that go on are deplorable. My vote at the next election is for the party that says theyll cut these sort out .

dog
£35 billion black hole in council pensions The extra money is to bail out pension schemes for local government workers, which have been criticised as “gold-plated” and over-generous. An investigation by this newspaper raised renewed criticism of the “final salary” pensions offered to council employees. Such pensions have been almost eradicated in the private sector. The slump in share prices caused by the recession has hit pension fund investments hard and added to the scale of the problem. Council chiefs admit that the situation was made worse when some local authorities took “pension holidays”, withholding contributions to their funds when the markets were strong. In a Sunday Telegraph survey of local authorities across England, Scotland and Wales, 136 authorities covering 60 per cent of the population reported a total pension deficit of more than £21 billion. Adjusting to reflect the national picture, the total size of the town hall pensions black hole is about £35 billion. The scheme with the biggest deficit is run by Lancashire county council and is £1.4 billion in the red. Birmingham city council’s scheme has a £1 billion deficit. Many councils are pouring millions of pounds a year extra into their pension funds to help close the deficits. Of one thing we can be sure. The public sector employees have no intention of sharing the pain.

bogbrush
While corruption and feather bedding is doubtless the underlying cause, don't rule out the staggeringly stupid tendency of management to think that more managers can facilitate more effectiveness. This happens in private corporations too. The truth, of course, is that more layers create more need for reports and "communication" which in turn requires yet more people. To explain the stupidity of this to a poor manager is to explain the rainbow to a man born blind.

The CE was so shy he found it an almost impossible task....clearly a useless chump of the first order who rules from behind a closed door.
