The company which owns jewellery brands Symington's and Red Contemporary has gone into administration.

Directors of Martin Groundland cited difficult trading conditions and unsuccessful attempts to restructure and refinance the business.

The Glasgow-based firm employs 91 people in 13 shops in Scotland, the north of England and Northern Ireland.

Administrator KPMG said 78 staff would be retained. The shops will continue to trade while a buyer is sought.

Diamonds are not forever it seems.

Their early success has now been tarnished.

Is the whole chain up for sale?

A friend works for a jewellers in London. The no1 diamond jewllers, you know the one where you feel instantly uncomfortable if you stumble in off bond street and then realise you shouldnt be there without a million quid in your pocket. Before Xmas they were already melting down the castings (unfinished empty settings) into lumps of the various metals in case they had to sell them off.
