  1. Hah - I wish I was rich enough to be a cash buyer! No - definite hefty mortgage would be required!
  2. Thanks Tim. Is the survey the same as the one you would use to buy a property through the regular channels or are there companies that specialise in quick turnaround / light auction surveys?
  3. There still seems to be some debate as to whether another company will take over the facility, with the government keen to incentivise this. If one of the big CROs sees the opportunity and steps in then now could prove to be a very good time to buy down there! (And no, I don't live there and have a vested interest, just work in pharma so am interested to see what happens!)
  4. Wow - seriously? So I guess you need to do your homework / surveys etc. before you go to the auction, which could get expensive. Might explain why it's apparently cheaper to buy then - you pay your money and take a chance!
  5. Whoops - talk about a great way to make an impression as a newbie I think it might be because I tried to post and my computer hung, so I tried again not realising it had posted. Sorry folks and appreciate (both sets) of advice.....
  6. To be honest, as an observer who works in the pharma industry it's a miracle this site has stayed open so long. Research is much cheaper overseas. It will have a massive impact on the community though, the Pfizer site is like a small town in itself.
  7. Thanks for the advice. Weirdly, I was sure there was another response when I look earlier and I had replied to this but it seems to have gone. I guess mods might have taken both down but not sure why! What happens if you find you've bought a dud property at auction - do you have any comeback?
  8. So is there no general pre-auction survey done on the properties? Is it always up to the buyer to get this done? Surely there must be some grace period whereby if you buy at auction and the survey turns up a stinker you can back out? Sorry for a million questions, just interested to know how it works. Many of the websites seem to have their own "steer" on it due to vested interest.
  9. Hi, It looks like auctions are getting to be more popular and I was surprised to see that Zoopla are even getting in on the action now - claiming almost a million visitors to their auctions section and 8,000 unique bidders (source: http://www.makeoffer.co.uk/blog/2011/02/01/interview-with-mark-witherspoon-strategic-development-director-at-zoopla-co-uk/ ) However, looking at it from the perspective of a potential buyer, does it work out cheaper to buy at auction or do you end up paying the same / more for potentially dodgy properties? Anyone got any useful figures? I have to admit to being a bit scared about the prospect of going to a property auction in case I get carried away!!!! Any advice / figures much appreciated!

  11. Hi all, Been away from here for a loooong time but still looking to buy and keeping an eye on auctions. I came across this site, which is fairly new, but has a decent listing of upcoming auctions and lets you search by area: http://www.makeoffer.co.uk Not yet been brave enough to go along but hopefully soon. Probably not the right place to discuss this, but they also had an interesting blog post mentioning HPC, which is what reminded me to check back here: http://www.makeoffer.co.uk/blog/2010/10/10/don%E2%80%99t-listen-to-the-%E2%80%9Cexperts%E2%80%9D-on-housepricecrash-co-uk/
  12. It is very rare for any forecast to be accurate, so any forecast should only be judged by how it fairs compared to other forecasts. So, in order to criticise a forecast you should demonstrate you can provide a more accurate one. So, what are your predictions Harris?
  13. This amounts to little more than theft of taxpayers money IMO - absolutely disgraceful. If labour had any honour left they would call an election now and put an end to the whole thing. Instead, we have to wait two years whilst they make incompetent decision after incompetent decision and risk the entire country going bankrupt. I only hope that when this is all over they are taken to account and stand trial for their actions.
  14. So, the key question that everyone will be asking is....does RB weigh the same as a duck?
  15. Surely it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. The significant share price drop combined with massive cash withdrawal from customers is a very dangerous situation no matter how stable Northern Rock claim to be.
