  1. Most of the leavers I meet are frothing at the mouth about the whole thing and most of the remainers are what I would call in the "grudgingly remain" camp. Looking at many of the rabid comments on this thread is it any wonder that remainers don't stick their heads over the parapet when they don't feel as strongly about the whole thing anyway?
  2. Genuine question - how the heck would you change the sheets on that bed? You can't pull the mattress out because it's already in the widest part of the room. You couldn't tuck new sheets in in-situ as you would need to kneel on the bed to reach the far corners so couldn't lift the mattress up to tuck the sheet under. Just stupid and impractical.
  3. Surely that's the price for the entire block ???
  4. If they are that cold at night why don't they just double up on the bedding????? Years ago I used to have to sleep wrapped in a duvet inside a sleeping bag on the coldest nights - frost on the inside of the windows etc. As kids we used to have to sleep in our coats some nights - that was normal for a lot of people.
  5. You've not been to Wiltshire for a while then
  6. Mmmm - just followed the links for a look - using children's gravestones to decorate the house - tells you everything you need to know about him really.
  7. Jesus wept. I just followed the links to look at the UCL website for the halls of residence prices. How can anybody normal afford to go there? Just as a comparison, I lived in intercollegiate halls in central London in the late 80s and it was £44 a week all in including food then. When renting privately the most I paid was £25 a week (and then got £4 of that back as rent rebate every week). Those colleges must be minting it.
  8. Recently heard that DSTL are beginning the process of laying off loads of chemists and biologists and they are moving further and further into contracting out as much research as possible. That's potentially an awful lot of well paid local jobs going. Can anyone else confirm this?
  9. Mmmm looks like blue lias flagstone floor. I'd love that, can't afford though.
  10. Can't get on the Nationwide log-in. Apparently there have been problems all day and payments and transfers have not been processed - lots of angry people online right now.
  11. Wasn't the £5 spend at Waitrose to get the free newspaper? They still hand out a paper cup for the coffee machine at the door at our nearest Waitrose but you have to buy something to eat with it if you want to sit in the cafe. Seems reasonable enough, sometimes it's a really good cup of coffee.
  12. I really can't get my head round the psychology of this - what is the point of "owning" so much? I get having a nice pad in London and having a countryside pad somewhere by the sea and getting a house for your Mum if you can afford it, but really what is the point of having all those places? He can't possibly get round and use them all. If I had that many millions going spare I think I'd want to sink it into some socially useful legacy rather than a pointless property portfolio.
  13. Rightmove sp3 search this morning - other than 3 parcels of agricultural land that came on the market on Friday, the first page and a half of listings are all reductions. Yay!
  14. You must have been brought up well posh then boy - when I was a kid Langstone and Parc Seymour areas were considered very desirable locally. Nice bit of countryside not far from the steelworks. There's lovely.
  15. Ah - my mistake sorry - only usually get to catch it on a Monday - it's the ironing programme of choice. Still an absolute corker - took all of 1.3 seconds to find on rightmove - it is still sitting there untouched after two years, total criminal waste of a home for someone.
  16. Bought at Auction for £126K After blinging up valued by agents at £165K Developer laughed at this, said they had already been offered £195K and turned it down. Put on market at £249K Two years later still on market at newly enlarged price. http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-43720595.html?premiumA=true The developer is "prepared to be patient" until the right idiot comes along. They will be waiting a long time................................. Edit to add: £5K pa service charge and no parking space either!
  17. Just been fantasy shopping for my ideal retirement pad with views of the sea etc etc. Anyway, was somewhat surprised to only find 14 properties for sale within a five mile radius of Fishguard on Rightmove and they were all complete kite flyers too. Checked the same search area on "On the Market" and all those 100's of properties I expected to see were there instead. Has anybody else noticed this wholesale transfer of agents away from Rightmove anywhere else? It certainly hasn't happened around my current location in south Wiltshire.
  18. Oh you're such a doom-monger spyguy! I didn't suggest that we have argued, merely that we have responded to each others posts on the Salisbury forum. PHL Porton has been on the cusp for years, nothing's happened yet. Over the fence DSTL Porton is bigger and building more facilities. The science park there has more activity and has spun off PHA and MoD staff into start-up companies. Land Command functions have all just relocated a few miles north east - nobody would have needed to relocate just because they were working in Andover and not Wilton. 30-40 minutes travel from Waterloo? Depends where you work in London - for me it was a 10 minute walk. Used the train journey up in the morning as part of my nights sleep. Regardless of time involved, plenty do it every day. I have no view on Friends Life or whatever they are called now, you obviously know more about that than me. I only call it as I see it and recently, and very depressingly, I've seen most of the low end inventory around Tisbury shift and popup for rent shortly afterwards. Someone is now buying around here, but not to live in themselves. It doesn't make sense because I can't see that the returns are worthwhile at the given sold prices.
  19. Crikey I might have to take that as a compliment. I'm nowhere near posh enough to be an estate agent around here. Chavviest local estate agent - Connells maybe, but they're in Salisbury? I can't help myself - I just have to correct Spyguy's factually inaccurate pronouncements about the MoD and related local employers. We both have form on the "Salisbury" thread.
  20. I don't believe that the MoD is "shutting down". Tisbury is main line to Waterloo and I can assure you some serious money gets on that train in the morning. Still loads of wealthies buying character properties and an apparent surge of bottom end properties selling and then coming on the rental market a month or two later. £600K+ seems to have stalled completely though. Lots of chicken processing still around - just a bit further down the A303.
  21. Repos always seem to have "not tested" or "do not use" tape over the kitchen sinks, basins and loos around my way.
