  1. Ah, we did some really stupid things with our student house in Birmingham...

...but it was a tip when we moved in, so why would we give a damn? Thinking back we were pretty lucky the boiler didn't kill us.

We had a back boiler, and burned some of the furniture! The miners were on strike and I was in Newcastle! Some of my house colleagues were related to miners, and didn't like Thatcher much! Eventually we went "scab" and bought some Polish coal!

  2. Monbiot and Toynbee have been bleating in the Guardian for decades now and at every turn the government comprehensively ignores them.

I think Monbiot's support is a kiss of death for LVT - in many people's minds it will now be a crazy lefty idea unworthy of further consideration.

Mr Monbiot is certainly a person I agree with only rarely!

    !

  3. University was always a sledge hammer to crack a nut, if it was purely about education you could learn the stuff in a year in the town you live in. But displacing youngsters turns it into a rite of passage, a gravy train for BTL speculators and a boost to debt and GDP. It's all a Blairite wet dream.

It's seem to me that these days a person's whole life from 0-25 is about realising the parent's dream of sending their kids to Uni to supplement their kids knowledge by 0.01%...it's just unbelievable.

Yes! If I had to do it today I would go to Germany, or somewhere else in Europe!

  4. Given that for a detached house, a 4kW solar installation and solar hot water would come in at under £10k (and make the mortgage more affordable via FiT..) it's amazing that they are not standard on houses with a £350k price tag.

Yes, but I'd rather not be enthralled to some "solar company" renting my roof for 25 years! If the kit comes with the house, and it's owned by yours from day 1, I would be delighted! Then I have to get it maintained, but that's part of the "joy" of property ownership!

  5. Labour had the Future Jobs Fund. Which was actually quite successful.

Young people got jobs, and they worked. But only for a maximum of 50 weeks, for if they did 52 they would be entitled to employment security.

I've never known security of employment.

Neither have most of my peers.

Whilst older people I know who have been made redundant once in 30+ years and received a handsome payoff. I've known people still in their teens suffer redundancy multiple times without any form of compensation.

No! I've been laid off several times over, always with the fine offer of a minimal payoff!

  6. Quite right, if a billionaire wants to buy all the food in the world and sit on it to watch us all starve, that's his affair....

To be serious I know one single person who lives in a large 4 bed detached in Balham with an elderly single mother living down the road in another similar. Any attempt I have made to suggest they may not need all that space has been treated with derision ...(they have no other relatives to leave the money too either)

Maybe they can adopt me? B)

  7. T

I can't fight it but it makes me sad. In my early 20s my mate and I practically lived in the Goose, middle class private schoolboys both of us but we had many a cracking night with the staff and a gang of builders. I met my wife in there. All gone now :( .

You would not have mistaken me for one of those! Still I'm quite a happy bloke!

  8. He's got 3 kids as well. In 15 years or so I guess they'll just have to starting saving for a £280k 20% deposit. Then bag a job with a similar salary, just to get the 4x multiples for the mortgage on their starter flat (inflation adjustments needed). Otherwise they might have to move to Hull.

Now that would prove there is a God!

  9. Actually getting a BTL property and living in it is the latest mortgage fraud. If people who don't have the income to get a mortgage for the property but have a deposit get a BTL mortgage but live in the property themselves.

It's the equivalent of self-certified mortgages in 2007.

Amazing! They can moan about themselves when the boiler goes wrong!
