  1. The planning laws are there for a reason, and a lot of those reasons are nothing to do with nimby's. There was a book, or am I thinking of the Matrix, anyway the premise is that with total security comes lethargy. Society does not advance unless we have pressures, problems, the need to struggle to survive. Some of the best advancements for mankind have been made during some of the worst times for humanity. To have what you propose would teach our offspring nothing. It's probably no accident that security comes with age, when we no longer have to teach the next generation how to survive, but instead give them something to aspire to. I would rather struggle and raise a family than to have an easy life. Look at the youth of the rich and how they live their lives, would you want that for your children?
  2. That would be big, or have you shorted them?
  3. I think we all understand your point cells, but it's unrealistic to expect total security in this day and age, and any other age for that matter. There will be many people for who housing will never be affordable or secure, it's a fact of life. A sad fact, but a fact never the less. ATM we have a ridiculous situation with housing being unaffordable for the majority of people, even those who have houses (if that makes sense).
  4. I'm with shitfly on this one, spelling is no indicator of someone's intelligence or the quality of their posts. In fact someone who proposes violence, 'rabbit punch', is viewed in a very negative way by me, regardless of their spelling abilities.
  5. Then you'll never have children A.Steve, ask your parents if they struggled/worried when they first got married, had their first child, etc.? Life is a gamble, you can't expect to have a family, nor could you ever in the past, without financial worries. Unless of course you happen to be inline for the throne or something similar? Generations of people have been born in homes not owned by their parents. Security comes with age, i.e. the kids bugger off (I hope so anyway, or I'm going to cry)
  6. I didn't think you were referring to me or my wife, but I thought it was worth making a point about your 'shotgun' generalisation. It's always worth being specific about the target of an insult, just in case you hit the wrong people. If, as you suggest, we are nothing more than a product of our environment with no hope of advancement, then there isn't much hope for the 20 somethings now who are pointing the finger of blame at their parents for their greed in causing this mess. If you take your argument then they are going to be as greedy as their parents and as big a pain to their children.
  7. Everyone here wants a housing crash, the bulls seem to be extinct now thankfully, and we all want to live comfortably. Her parents aren't going to be well off for much longer, in a few years the older generation are going to find out that an investment portfolio that's based on a single asset class is bad, really bad. You have asked for a handout, from parents, so your statement of being left alone is not accurate, sorry. What I'm seeing or hearing a lot of in various quarters (not here that often) is that people seem to expect, even demand to have everything. It can't be done, we tried that over the last decade with easy credit and it just ends in pain. Hopefully the one thing society learns from this experience is prudence, that is only buy what you can afford to save for. edit: Spelling and to add an apology for almost quoting broon at the end, 'prudence'
  8. So a person who indebts themselves to the point where they can't have children is the sort of person who should be breeding? Whilst someone, like my and my wife for example, who made the decision not to buy a few years back but to continue renting and raise a family is a "thick-as-sh*t chav" in your opinion?
  9. It wasn't her parents etc who forced her down this route but society, e.g the press, easy credit, and her own desire to keep up with the Jones's. Her position is in fact a lot better than many others of a generation or two ago, as she has a good sized house, her income covers the bills, all she needs is a husband/partner and the nest is complete. We have the right to make choices, the only thing we can't choose is to have everything Sexism, ageism, heightism, racism, under experience, we all suffer from one form of discrimination or other which means life is tough, it always has been, it always will be.
  10. Hi Reaper I wonder if today's attitude is more about still being able to afford the luxuries, e.g. expensive cars, holidays etc, rather than make the personal sacrifices that you have to make when you have children? For example: We went without a proper holiday for about 5 years when our youngest was born... children eat money not Rusks [Now I've got the munchies for a bowl of Rusks]
  11. I'm afraid I don't really follow your logic on this one? If she meets someone he'll probably have a job and it's quite possible for two people to work and have children... we did. It can be tough going to have children and both work, but when was life ever simple/easy? Her biggest problem IMHO, isn't money but her age, in a few years her chances of conceiving decrease rapidly.
  12. I voted for all options (the poll has checkboxes, not radio buttons), so I think I've nailed this one Then again inflation could go down.. wow, I think I just saw a flying pig.
  13. I like that too about Lidl and Aldi, although it was confusing the first time I experienced my shopping been 'thrown' at me by the checkout staff. It's mildly annoying standing at the Sainsbury's checkout watching some punter at the front of the queue sort their shopping alphabetically, by size, weight, and probably colour, into seperate carrier bags; when all you want to do is to buy a pint of milk and get the heck out of there edited: crap grammar, so no change there then
  14. I can spend 5 minutes reading and re-reading a post, but I spot most of the typo's, bad grammar and spelling mistakes after I've clicked on the 'add reply' button. It's a 'Doh!' moment when I finally spot them. Point taken though Paddles, edits should be flagged as to why they were made.
  15. Apparently some people out there are confused by, or simply don't understand, the meaning of the phrase 'house price crash'. So instead of dropping the price to find a buyer why not drive the EA mad with endless changes to the description, that's got to be why it's not selling. Plus it'll give the poor EA something to do during the day. or and if that fails to find a buyer, stick the price up. I think this is going to be a long drawn out affair if the seller's can't grasp the concept of a "crash"
  16. Hi M21er, I've been missing your auction posts, are you thinking of doing anymore? cheers Reggie p.s. Bump
  17. These are 4 posts from a thread, in the order that they were posted, if you look at the times they go 08:15, 08:20, 07:27 and 07:27. The times of the last two posts have had an hour subtracted from them, which causes the topic to move half way down the forum list. If you click on the red box in the quote blocks above it will take you to the thread I'm talking about. Is anyone else seeing this or do we have a problem with the Forum ATM? I'm having to scroll up and down the topic listing page to make sure I'm not missing anything.
  18. I see your point PhilT, but what I find perplexing is the sheer level of denial, it's massive. I would expect this from, how do I put this politely, people of a lower intelligence, but I would expect these men/women to have a level of consciousness that allows them to see the 'bigger' picture. Maybe they've spent too much time sniffing dry rot?
  19. Completely off topic but look at the times of the last two posts, I've seen this happen a few times recently. Anyone know why the system is subtracting an hour from some post times, at busy times it can force a topic off the front page?
  20. Hi T4Horsemen Absolutely, I/we want affordable housing, but done in a way that didn't destroy the flipping economy and people's lives. The muppets in charge have really mucked things up big time.
  21. Number 3 appears in virtually every comment, do these people seriously think that if the press were to stop reporting about houses, then everything will be fine with the housing market? Whatever we say about these people they are intelligent, relatively, so why the mass denial about the credit crunch, over valued houses, liar loans, etc, etc? Weird!
  22. Hi Spoony here are a couple of sites I use for fund research, there are plenty of others. The Times and Telegraph websites have some useful information/articles in their money sections. http://www.h-l.co.uk/ http://www.fidelity.co.uk/adviserclient/index.html
