  1. rumours of a buy out driving shares up now http://uk.reuters.com/article/businessNews...102018320080723 HBOS shares jump on BBVA bid talk Wed Jul 23, 2008 10:16am BST Email | Print | Share| Single Page| Recommend (-) [-] Text [+] LONDON (Reuters) - HBOS (HBOS.L: Quote, Profile, Research) shares rose more than 12 percent on Wednesday on market talk of bid interest from Spanish rival BBVA (BBVA.MC: Quote, Profile, Research), traders said. At 10:05 a.m., HBOS was up 12.5 percent, topping gainers on the FTSE .FTSE, which was up 1.9 percent. BBVA was up 3.4 percent and the DJ Stoxx European banking sector index was up 4.7 percent. Neither BBVA nor HBOS was immediately available for comment. "All the banks are massively strong across Europe," said one trader. "The sentiment is now that banks are starting to find a level (and) there was a rumour doing the rounds of BBVA for HBOS."
  2. Seems to be temporary jobs in the banking system now as well ... both HBOS and Barclays announced cutting staff this week http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/07/15/ba...ys_it_job_cuts/
  3. not good news in the banking sector http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/07/15/ba...ys_it_job_cuts/ "Barclays is to axe 1,800 IT jobs in the UK as part of a major business overhaul to set up technology centres in key offshore locations around the world, with 700 workers being forced out by September." Both HBOS and Barclays announce job cuts days before their rights deadlines ... wander if these moves will keep the markets happy Annecdotally it seems not all the banks IT divisions are suffering so badly, I spoke to a recruitment company week before last who had rang me about a business analyst role at HSBC, the lady I spoke to told me HSBC are currently recruiting 500 IT people across Sheffield, Birmingham, Windsor and London Considering they currently have 2100 IT staff ( http://www.jobs.hsbc.co.uk/htse/ ) that's quite an increase and is bucking the financial services trend and IT headcount freezes I have seen at HBOS
  4. HBOS share price has been a bloodbath this morning. Interesting posts on III suggesting there share price has been manipulated to be kept at £2.75 until the rights issue (deadline Friday). As most peoples cheques are now in the post the carnage has begun
  5. I am sure its no co-incidence Barclays have done this around the same time there is yet another court case going on to decide legality of penalty charges
  6. sorry to drag up an old topic, but I can't start a new one breaking news on our staff intranet site .... this could kill bank shares News: Overdraft Charges HBOS is aware that the judgment on the preliminary issues in the test case about overdraft charges will be published tomorrow. (23/04/08) The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) and eight banking institutions, including HBOS, have jointly entered into the test case process. All want legal certainty about the fairness of overdraft charges. HBOS believes that the fees customers pay for unarranged overdrafts are fair. HBOS has taken a number of proactive steps to assist customers, including the provision of leaflets offering advice to help customers avoid overdraft charges. This is the first stage of the test case process, on the subject of fees and charges for unarranged overdrafts on personal current accounts.

  8. Halifax will be passing on the full rate cut to existing borrowers. It will be reducing its standard variable rate from 7.25% to 7% with effect from 1 May 2008.
  9. i am sure we will see some more ups and downs before then, but the results of the court case on bank charges (due end July) is what I think will most likely bring uk bank shares right back down
  10. yip not bust quite yet. Agb41 had asked yesterday for stats on how many staff put their bonus into shares, found this earlier on the hbos intranet "This year over 13,500 colleagues joined Sharekicker. Since 2002, colleagues have used over £300m of their bonus to buy more than 41m shares. This year saw more shares than ever - nearly 10m - being acquired through Sharekicker." That means staff have collectively made £10 million paper profits since Thursday
  11. not quite yet HBOS Advances After Executives Purchase Shares in U.K. Bank By Jon Menon March 25 (Bloomberg) -- HBOS Plc, Britain's biggest mortgage lender, rose as much as 17 percent in London trading, marking its biggest gain ever, after the company's executives bought shares in the bank. Edinburgh-based HBOS gained as much as 80 pence to 554 pence at 8.07 a.m. in London. HBOS Chief Executive Officer Andy Hornby and other employees bought a total of 1.4 million shares on March 20, the bank disclosed yesterday. U.K. regulators said March 19 they are investigating ``false rumors'' on stocks after HBOS declined to the lowest ever price on speculation it had funding problems. The bank also denied it had any such problems.
  12. Only time will tell I guess. In other hbos related news theres a name being banded about for last weeks problems http://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/main.jhtm.../cnshort125.xml
  13. there was some really big trades going on in hbos on Thursday inc a £71 million buy http://www.lse.co.uk/ShareTrades.asp?share...&share=hbos if we do go bust someones going to get there fingers burnt pretty badly
  14. sorry did i miss something in the last few hours, when did they go bust ? fine to say you think they are going to go bust (preferably substantiate it as well) but they clearly aren't as yet bust as I still have to go to work tommorow :-(
  15. I hope so, my hbos shares have tanked in value in the last year. If it hits anything decent by the beginning of July I fully intend to sell all of mine before the court case Personally I reckon gold will hit about $850 then starting going back up again, but perhaps not as dramatically as before
