  1. "The leading Bank of England official who accurately predicted the recession" No he didn't, he consistently voted for cuts in interest rates that would have inflated the bubble further. Talk about re-writing history.
  2. 24Mbps here. I think we must have Be director living in the village.
  3. You're joking, right? Yes, I'm sure some work was done where it wasn't strictly necessary, but the stuff I worked on (banking, airlines) would have been completely broken on Jan 1 2000 if nothing had been done.

  5. 60% more expensive in the UK than the US if you convert the prices to Yen: UK - 129220 EUR - 107865 US - 80147
  6. Two things to be aware of: - the stop loss isn't guaranteed. If the market gaps or falls/rises suddenly it won't necessarily be triggered at the price you set - transactions always seem to take a lot longer to be settled when the market's moving against you
  7. ebay killed the boot fairs round my way. Not because people sell on it instead but, like the charity shops, there is now an easy way to find out roughly what something's worth before you sell it.
  8. I think I've spotted a slight snag with this one http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-ren...y-24738425.html

  10. The link is safe, but by redirecting you like that ScaredEitherWay has set a cookie in your browser so he gets paid commission if you buy anything from ebay in the next 30 days. Pretty underhand if you ask me.
  11. Does anyone know what the total deposits are in RBS, Lloyds/HBOS and NR? It seems to me it might have ended up being cheaper to let them all fail and just refund the depositors. Edit: £800bn apparently
  12. This is what the Government think of anyone that complains about them wasting taxpayers money
  13. Her defence is that she stays in London from Monday to Friday (4 nights out of 7). There are 208 Monday to Friday nights (52 *4), and parliament is in recess for 79 of them so she, at most, stays in London for 35% of the year.
  14. We had a similar story today in my neck of the woods - http://www.bucksfreepress.co.uk/news/40680...ouncil_earners/ "THE number of council staff paid more than £50,000 a year rose 12 per cent in one year in Buckinghamshire according to new research. "
  15. A couple of years ago Circuit City fired their best salesmen because 'they were making too much money' and replaced them with lower paid staff. Karma's a beautiful thing.
  16. I'll nominate this - a years free water, gas and electricity. What's that worth, £2000 tops?
  17. I've not seen it mentioned so far: it is a criminal offence not to hand over encryption keys when requested to do so by the police (RIPA). There are ways around this though, TrueCrypt hidden volumes for example, where you encrypt sensitive data within an already encrypted volume and only give up the key to the first one. An easy way to get someone in trouble is plant an encrypted USB key drive in their car and then report them to the police as a suspected terrorist; they can't produce the key to the encrypted data because they don't have it.
  18. I'd have thought it would cost the best part of £60 to return the old one.
