In a car. If they used buses, trains, bikes, walking, there would be fewer traffic jams no? one of the worst times for traffic jams in my town is when all the parents are in their cars driving their kids to school (in town), and commuters are driving to the station (in town) to catch the train to London. Utter madness.

I take it from this that you are not an EV driver. If you were, you would know that the technology is superior.

But do have time to waste in traffic jams?

My worry is the opposite. I think many of these ideas will work for many (and probably most) but will not work for a very influential few (like Chelsea Tractor drivers who still want to drive their kids to private school on the other side of town for example). I think the survey data results will be positive with a majority in favour of the changes, but there will still be one hell of a stink.

New way to feed the HPI monster
14stFlyer replied to cattius's topic in House prices and the economy
This is a misrepresentation. You are designing a tax relief to benefit those with MOST DEBT, not lower earners. This is a perverse incentive and not progressive. -

Does not seem like a good idea to me. Why are we supposed to support policies that encourage people to get into more and more debt? Nope this is not “progressive”. -
Why all these fruit-loop responses? We have been promoting car use and long distance travel to do anything of interest in the U.K. for decades. These 15 min city and similar proposals promote walking and cycling and localism. This will improve our communities significantly, especially for the kids. Those that want to use cars and go long distances will still be able to chose to do so, it will just be less convenient. It will be more convenient for most to stay local and so most will stay local for most of the time. This is not a conspiracy, just a change for the better in public policy.

Are Britain's planned 15-minute cities effectively 15-minute control grids? No.

GenX not interested in retiring
14stFlyer replied to Mikhail Liebenstein's topic in House prices and the economy
You may be right. However, the direction of incentive of a UBI system is to stay at home and toss it off. I think we should be incentivising future generations in the other direction and encouraging them to strive for success and succeed in wonderful ways. I am not sure what this incentive should be, but do know that UBI as currently envisaged is not it. -

Women doing an "End run" on men

Apart from the fact that married men tend to lead longer, healthier lives? -
I find it interesting how you are couching this as some form of equality of opportunity when it looks like cynical exploitation to me. This is simply increasing the extent to which young working people can be put in to debt. These are people with no financial recourse either from their own assets, or from family assistance. The asset on which they are borrowing will, in any outcome that involves a fall in house prices/value over the first two years, not cover the debt. This will lock them into poor debt repayment terms, possibly for a period of decades (and potentially for the whole of their working lives). I find both the concept, and your portrayal of it, sickening.

Hasselnøddeis from Paradis? 🙂Karrysild? 😡 -
I cannot see anyone else agreeing with your solution Why not? Makes good sense to me, as long as pensioners remain eligible to other forms of benefits. Some may see this as brutal, but I am afraid we have some brutal decisions to make as a society. What dugs is proposing is prioritising the future, at the expense of the past. Combining this with a US style debt ceiling to rein in short-termist government spending and avoid stealing from future generations would also be more forward looking than our current approach.

Banking shares COLLAPSE - Is it happening?
14stFlyer replied to henry the king's topic in House prices and the economy
Not quite sure I quite catch your banter ms Lagarde, so apologies if not relevant, but I would ask the question “Are unspent transaction outputs, in themselves, collectible?” If not then I still worry about using rarity as a reason for increasing the value of other Bitcoin if some are destroyed. -

Then we are back to one-off NFTs. Scarcity works for valuing real world collectible objects of undoubted rarity and skill, no doubt, but does it really work in the long run for online tokens?
