  1. Great tool! Would it be possible to add finer filtering? I am interested in Birmingham City Centre, but the closest option I can find is Birmingham, which covers a far larger area.
  2. I visited for a (private sector) job interview recently, and the place seemed like it was booming - lots of new construction work.

  4. I watched the whole thing. Its basically an upmarket hostel, aimed at recent immigrants to the city who want to try something slightly hippy-ish while they find somewhere more permanent (the longest stay was 3 months). Its a cool idea, and that commune-type social environment can be really great, when it works (it can also be a nightmare). Its clearly not somewhere people stay long term, though.
  5. I am from the Midlands but I have never lived in Brum before. I am moving for work, which is near Birmingham Airport - and I would like a commute of under half an hour. Thanks for your views about the Jewelry Quarter/Digbeth. Moseley or Harboune would be an option but a public transport commute to BHX would take closer to a whole hour than a half, and driving looks even more bonkers. It looks like I could probably afford the lower end around the centre / Brindley Place / Mailbox, though.
  6. I realise that I am bumping an old thread here - so apologies if this is not the done thing. How has the flat in the Abacus building worked out? Has Digbeth been a place you have enjoyed living? - and what are your neighbours like in the Abacus building? I ask because I am looking for somewhere to live (almost certainly renting) in central Brum - the Jewelry Quarter seems like the nicest area, but Digbeth has a good vibe to it, and in the daylight it feels safe, despite the rumours of gun crime.
  7. Personally I would clear the debt - its the less risky option: your stock market gains could evaporate if the market crashes, but once the debt is paid then its gone for good. Also worth noting that the ISA allowance will be 20k for the next tax year, which will allow you to rebuild the ISA more quickly.
  8. My S&S ISA is up 18% on average this year, and the stuff I bought just after brexit is up even more. Its quite tempting to sell it and take the profit. They say you should not time the market though...

  10. AirBnB is not a hotel company, it is a tech company. As far as I can tell this means it is valued assuming infinite potential growth. Maybe when growth stops the valuation will nosedive.
  11. If we vote to remain, it will be very close thing, and Euroskepticism will remain a powerful force. I don't think the gov. Would get away with introducing the Euro. It would be political suicide.
  12. You are right - Immigrants are propping up the NHS, while British doctors and nurses want better pay and conditions and head off to Australia. The NHS needs fixing, not bodging with cheap labor - the same goes for the farmers that claim that their business would not survive without immigrants. We should improve productivity by automation and innovation instead of relying on cheap labor.

  14. From what I have read, both NY and London were, in the 80s, completely undesirable dumps. Then people started moving back to the inner cities, and since then there has been a boom in the population. I wonder if somehow London/NY could yet loose their desirable status.

  16. 22% for a room in a shared house (including bills). I very often want my own space these days, but suffering the annoyances of living with somewhat slummy people is made easier by knowing I will be able to buy in two years without a mortgage (hopefully )
  17. I will almost certainly be voting out. I can rationalise it, but it just comes down to a gut feeling that the EU style ever-larger government will lead to a dystopian illiberal future. It's not because I dislike what they have done - I think they have made many sensible laws - it's because I don't trust that they will continue to be benign, and I think when they start to turn on the people, we won't be able to vote them out.
  18. Supposedly (I am too young to remember) London in the 80s was not somewhere nice middle class white people wanted to live. It might yet return to that state.
  19. I am not an expat at the moment, but I am looking into jobs in Barcelona (there are some), because I want a change.
