Does this matter? If they're "tax havens" they're not bringing in any revenue to the government. Plus it would stop people whinging about the "London Laundromat" etc. I mean, if they want to know what you're doing with your own money if you withdraw £2k from your TSB account, shouldn't they also be interested in what Ivan is doing with his £2 BILLION account in a tax haven? -

Whatever you think of ZeroHedge, they use some pretty funny graphics at times.

Watching Biden's statement again, he does talk about shutting it down, which is what Nordstream 2 was, once Russia's invasion started. So to be fair, I don't even think Biden needed to be talking about sanctions. He could have just meant shutting it down, as in, not using it. I think Biden was more likely talking about persuading the Germans not to use it, rather than secretly blowing it up.

It seems that even the BBC has quoted an analyst who thinks it would be "bizarre" if Russia attacked its own pipelines. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-63057966 Mike Fulwood, a senior research fellow at the independent Oxford Institute for Energy Studies told the BBC sabotage was, indeed, the most likely cause of the leaks. "To rupture an offshore pipeline is a rare occurrence, so three in 18 hours would be a big coincidence," he said. If the sabotage was indeed committed by Russia, this was a "bizarre" move, he said, as it had already shut supplies off.

The new normal is "up and down like a fiddler's elbow". There's is no "new normal" at present. -
In the case of Nordsteam 2 there were no contracts, so your conspiracy theory sounds a bit 💩 Plus, Russia has the tap, so why would it blow up the tap and sabotage its own perceived leverage? (Emphasis on "perceived" since the West aren't going to cave, but Russia thinks it might.) It's fascinating to watch people Choose Their Own Conspiracy Theories.

Not entirely useless. It's a bargaining chip. From the Russian point of view, there's a distinct possibility they think Germany might cave over the winter. We know they won't, but that's not necessarily how the Russians see it. The problem with calling them "daft anti-US groups" is that, in this instance, the President of the United States himself is on record as saying they have ways of taking it out if they want. That definitely makes them a suspect. Just not the only one.

What happens to current mortgage offers?

Thanks for the excuse. -
There probably is, but I don't follow the details closely, so I don't know how much of it is genuine and how much is hysteria... but we're definitely a very wasteful and polluting species right now, so tidying up our act is a good thing. (I presume you threw out this question to help you decide which box to put me in?) Maybe. But look at it from the point of view of a traditional Italian with a Catholic heritage. If suddenly all the things you believe in (anti-abortion, family values etc) are being reversed, then it might appear to be a threat to you. Either way, I also said in an earlier post that this is the nature of politics. Politicians always need a boogeyman, whether it's "Westminster" or "the Tories". And based on forum threads here, a lot of forum posters need them too, whether it's the tOrYfAnBoYs or the bRexSh*t votIng pUtIn pAtSieS or Klaus Schwab and Bill Gates. Sometimes the boogeyman is real in certain contexts, and sometimes it's the equivalent of a monster under the bed.
