  1. I agree with most of that, but not everyone "born in the UK" is of ultimate British ancestry...
  2. We have eminent domain: in England "freehold" is not absolute ownership, as the ultimate title is vested in the Crown.
  3. Hi, my house (a low-end terrace) is up for sale and I am thinking of renting in Nottingham if the sale goes through - got a viewer on Saturday, although not building my hopes up. Looking on rightmove tonight at 2 bedroom properties for rent in Nottingham, I am dismayed at the prevalence of the student accommodation thing. You look at something that says £325 per month, and reading in more detail, it says that the place is for students, and it is £325 PER PERSON per month. The actual rental being demanded is two to four times the amount mentioned on Rightmove. I wish the whole higher education con had never got started - Mickey Mouse degrees and all that - and I can only think the £9K a year fees a good thing, if it dampens the market for accommodation, because many of these landlords are offering for rent terraced houses that they picked up for nowt 10 years ago and are getting £1200 or more from them in rent. Why is this country such a con?
  4. I thought you were being sarcastic, until I clicked on the link - and found it was true. The dozy bat in the palace has awarded him a peerage for "services to the debasement of the coin of the realm".
  5. That's interesting. I'm a member of a DW Gym. Their sports shop is extremely overpriced - and Sports Direct in the same town sells everything at a fraction of the price.
  6. over the sale and rent back scam. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/borrowing/mortgages/10129883/Disgraceful-mortgage-broker-receives-record-1m-fine.html A MODERATOR HAS EDITED A RACIST REMARK FROM THIS POST FOLLOWING COMPLAINTS.
  7. "Law of the land" - rubbish. I do not believe it can be shown that English Common Law grants Parliament the right to force us to subscribe to political propaganda! As the BBC's output contains a high percentage of programmes promoting anti-racism and multi-culturalism (like EastEnders - used as a vehicle for political messages) as well as EU membership and climate change hysteria, it is quite contentious to make funding such output compulsory!
  8. Ruffles - they DO get the basic state pension as well - everyone does.
  9. Why should employers budget for their pensions? Take responsibility for yourselves and get your own pensions. I am absolutely opposed to the council scroungers expecting us to pay for them forever. Look public-sector pensions were a con all along - and we can't afford it.
  10. No, they're not. First of all, even when pension contributions were deducted from salary, THEY ARE DEFINED BENEFIT PENSIONS - and so the pension is guaranteed at a certain rate, however badly the pension investments perform - all topped up by the taxpayer. The public sector doesn't do defined contribution pensions - ie, where you get what you paid in for yourself - as that would not involve conning the public, and so would not be accepted by the public-sector fraudsters/workers. Look. Can I make it simple? People who have NO PENSION provision other than the state retirement pension are being conned into paying council tax, a quarter of which goes to fund council pensions. This is money taken directly from people who don't have pensions and given to public-sector workers. I would, if in power, cancel all public-sector pensions, including those already being paid out! Let them survive on the state retirement pension! They are not deferred wages at all - the council workers have higher wages than us! Time to halt the gravy train. And publicly shame all public-sector workers.
  11. Well, they might have to cut council pensions or salaries otherwise - and that WOULD be a tragedy...
  12. Of course a city can go bankrupt - whole countries can, like France in the 18th century or Argentina in 2001. In the US, the city can go for Chapter 9 bankruptcy - read this: http://www.freep.com/article/20130616/NEWS01/306160056/Detroit-Chapter-9-bankruptcy-FAQ?odyssey=obinsite
  13. Well, you seem to have used the infinitive there - what about looking up the plural imperative?
  14. Unfortunately, graduates are not all scientists and engineers. Mickey Mouse courses are more popular.
  15. The connection in the US between student loan debt and house prices was made at http://www.cnbc.com/id/100513344 It goes on to say that large numbers of graduates are delinquent on their debts by more than 3 months' payments, and so they can't get credit. So the whole debt-fuelled consumer economy is just not working as it used to...
  16. We are a distinct race. The British are overwhelmingly descended from hunters who settled the country in the last stages of the Ice Age - descent from a few thousand people here in the Ice AGe accounts for 80% of our DNA (see http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/07/0719_050719_britishgene.html ). We most definitely are a distinct race.
  17. See http://www.telegraph.co.uk/property/propertynews/10104659/Footballer-Lee-Barnard-and-Playboy-model-told-tenants-get-out-in-14-days-or-we-cut-power.html Lee Barnard threatens tenants he will cut the power off if they don't leave in 2 weeks.
  18. The trouble is in some areas "established residents" of more than 20 years' standing include many people who are not English.
  19. Because the phrasing was odd. "In both English and Polish language". It should be "in both English and Polish" or "in both the English and Polish languages", or "in both English and the Polish language". The sentence as it stands is incorrect.
  20. Er... this doesn't correspond to my image of punishment. It should be illegal for any prison to allow inmates to watch TV. Where's the punishment? Basically, in my view, prisons should be close to the dungeon concept.
  21. I have to admit sleeping rough in any weather at all is unpleasant... Yet another consequence of HPI obsession.
  22. Children should pay for their lunches in cash - not through some online payment system all set up for the convenience of the school and causing more arguments and problems than it solves.
