  1. You have a point referring to the current Honda team but paired with Mclaren... they were unbeatable my friend "After losing the previous two Constructors titles to Williams in 1986 and 1987, McLaren was able to convince Honda to switch its backing from Williams starting in 1988. The McLaren-Honda MP4/4 won an amazing 15 of 16 races that year and leading all but 27 laps, achieving a staggering and unbeaten record to this date. (Senna had been leading comfortably at Monza, but collided with back-marker Jean-Louis Schlesser's Williams.) Ayrton Senna took the driver's title that season, his first with the Woking marque. The next year, using a new 3.5 L naturally-aspirated engine designed by Honda, McLaren again won both titles with the McLaren MP4/5, with Alain Prost clinching it at the Japanese Grand Prix after a highly controversial collision with his teammate Senna. This was the culmination of a vitriolic feud between the two men. Believing that Honda and Ron Dennis viewed Senna as the future of the team, Prost announced on July 1989 that he would not resign with the team. By Suzuka, the Brazilian had two cars and 20 people around him, while the Frenchman had one car with maybe four or five mechanics.[10] In support of Senna, who had finished the race first but was subsequently disqualified, McLaren appealed unsuccessfully. Alain Prost left to join the Ferrari team in 1990. Nevertheless, McLaren continued to top Formula One for the next two seasons. Despite stiff challenges from Prost's Ferrari and Nigel Mansell's Williams, Senna won the World Drivers' Championship in 1990 and 1991, respectively, using the MP4/6 V12. McLaren also won the constructors title in both of those years. New teammate Gerhard Berger helped to ensure this double success and the McLaren drivers often played pranks on each other to lighten the atmosphere Mid-1990s decline By 1993, Honda had withdrawn from F1 and the team used underpowered Ford V8 engines to power the MP4/8. Although Ayrton Senna (pictured at the German GP) won five races, McLaren was not a match for the dominant Williams team. After the 1993 Australian Grand Prix, the team failed to win a race until 1997. Beginning in 1992, McLaren's dominance began to be eroded by the ascendant Renault-powered Williams (cue traction control, and ABS), a drop in form that was compounded by the departure of Honda from Formula One at the end of that season." think again my friend!
  2. PS... just for the record... Ariel Atom... 2.0 Honda i-VTEC supercharged engine with 300bhp... 0-60 in 2.8 seconds... and around 600bhp per tonne costs around 32k... compared to a M3 on a track or pretty much any production car... bye bye... lol PS caparo doesn't fall into this category as it doesn't go over speed humps lol and it sets on fire!! for you RWD lovers... yes it is
  3. The civic type R is a 2.0i, is faster, and if you want 35mpg is certainly achievable on combined cycles so therefore compare that with your BMW, its the same price as the one illustrated above higher spec'd and is much better on a like for like with the BMW performance wise, so the choice is there if the customer decides it was a hot hatch, the bmw needs a 130 to compete performance wise my friend, then your talking 50% more money, as much as residuals are higher, its because NO ONE takes into account the cost of the optional extra that people spend over 5k kitting BMW's out with, please show me the evidence that this is the case, I believe the Type R's have high residuals like 55% after 3 years... which is very good! OK, yes its a firm ride, but the EP3 civic was harder, so they have softened it over, but ive never disputed in the slightest its a firm ride, but dont exaggerate the fact to the point its nearly unuaseable, granted if your 60years of age it would be of no interest where as a Golf GTI (might be), but to be honest, does anyone crank it round B roads that are bumpy? Cool comparison then... and the A road is where it lives, bumpy or not... your telling me a BMW doesnt get unsettled by bumps? lol... i've never drove a car that hasn't been unsettled by bumps... ever (maybe im missing out i'll be sure to look out for some soon, give it a bash, see how high I bounce lol)... the fact you don't notice it gives you a false sense of security and will leave you being very surprised and embarrased, one way or the other, as you will suddenly find yourself in a very tricky situation, trust me, ive been there, and my friend has when he rolled his car 5 times in one hit yes he was in BMW going round a bend when he lost it back end come out hit a wall which flipped it over many times (i think he thought he was in a civic or a hot hatch when he did it)! The only cars ive known not to be unsetlled by bumps is a citroen, as they have the hydrolic suspension, but if you want the feelingless wallowy ride, feel free.
  4. November 2000 http://asia.vtec.net/article/ivtec/ so not in 2007... but 2000 as in the Ep3 civic type R and to answer you question, i think the technology is used throughout the range, rather than JUST the M3
  5. good information... lets summarise if your loaded and have more money that sense (ie professional, or a drug dealer, PIMP etc) - buy a BMW, or Audi (cause thats what people expect of you, need to keep up with the smiths and jones's and later in life move onto a porsche, or something similar like a "porsche" lol, cause its german) if your not so loaded want to make a big impression and have good access to credit or need a company car - buy a BMW Diesel, cause they have good residuals and or have low emissions (supposedly, just cause when they test them the engine turns off, in reality who puts the damn thing into neutral and puts the handbrake on at lights? so BMW efficient engine dynamcis is basically legalised tax evasion) if your sensible or old - buy a honda (for some reason, they just make sense) they just go well, little goes wrong and most people once bitten normally buy more, for some reason, they might be reliable, the owners think they are, but others no better. if your a jack the lad, don't give a stuff about other people opinions, doesn't live on a road laden with spped bumps who likes to be different and wants a fun car - buy a Honda Type R (cause they are FUN) or a VXR (cause they are fast), ST (cause they are as fast and yet smoother than the rest) focus or a R26 (cause your man above recons they go invisible for some reason) or a golf GTI or not(cause the old ones were FUN) PS... im joking here guys... lol everyone buys their own cars for different reasons... lets just enjoy them for those reasons...
  6. gotta get your moneys worth aint ya!... lol guess you cant give out the business details? anyone been involved in a similar meeting? lol
  7. its always those that are pro active rather than reactive that succeed... in times like this! this is not a time for prudence... this is a time for big balls! lol
  8. im sure they had the same engines as fiats... FIRE engine! lol... or not!
  9. hey, im not knocking your opinion, just a fact that renaults are not the most reliable. and a FACT that honda Vtec's are! its very well known fact in the industry that they just keep on going my friend. where as french cars simply DO NOT. lol... just kidding... as for hoping a new one will be better than a civic just says it all... the civic is the benchmark! Simple... cheers. Honda are the innovators and the rest are followers... ;-)
  10. MY GOD... how selective is that... comparing a 2.0 petrol with a 1.8 honda? Is that cause they are the same price? or because .... what exactly? haha ... good luck getting a 120 to do 44 mpg... does that go some way to saving the cost of the car in the first place? or the abundance of equipment that you get on a standard BMW!? Compare a 118i SE 5dr cost£ 19,675 Engine Size 1995 cc Cylinders 4 0-60 mph 9.1 s Power Output 127 bhp Valves 16 Torque 180 Nm 133 lb-ft Top Speed 129 mph MPG 38 CO2 176 5 Speed Equipment see here (or lack of it ): http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/equipment/De...spx?deriv=29609 with a oh lets see a cheaper Honda Civic 1.8 i-VTEC EX 5d (Leather + SR + 18in Alloy) cost£ 18,900 Engine Size 1799 cc Cylinders 4 0-60 mph 8.6 s Power Output 138 bhp Valves 16 Torque 174 Nm 128 lb-ft Top Speed 127 mph MPG 42 CO2 156 6 Speed Equipment see here...(everything standard pretty much ): http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/equipment/De...spx?deriv=34337 Can you not see how much better it is when comparing not even like for like... to spec the BMW up to the civic (sat nav 1500, wheels 800 etc.. etc...etc...)... you do the maths... what do you get... oh a german car... with no room for rear seat passengers... oh and RWD... its not a hot hatch... so what does that even matter? no one even cares in this class of car to be honest! nor about the 0-60 nor about the top speed, they do about equipment, they do about ecomomy and safety! now please be quiet... sssshhhh
  11. I really don't think even the most hardened honda fans would have an NSX over a ferrari...
  12. No ... the extra torque forces an upgrade costing about 650-750 quid, with firmer settings so it doesnt slip. A brand new one might for a while... but accelerated wear would be a consideration, but obviously cheaper than upgrading lol!
  13. I really dont thing when honda developed the civic they ever thought they would be pinching 330 bmw drivers sales away from BMW... Yes I would say people in the market for 118 bmw's maybe... and which case, let start this comparison? or NOT
  14. TOP GEAR popularity compared to Autocar and EVO... are magazine'S run for profit, the only "non profit" making organisation is the BBC so the only unbiased opinion I trust is TOP GEAR, They salary their (overpaid) employee's and do not use sub contractor reporters. If you knew the fact that the jounalists were involved in developing the cars you mentioned above you would realise they are biased in their reporting. AUTOEXPRESS long term test... the driver handcuffed himself to the car, the only problems being a puncture... get over the fastness issue, and hatred of japanese engineering, the quality of build and attention to detail along with the innovation is superior all day long. And please remember when TOP GEAR & 5th Gear test drove the Megane, it broke...not once... but twice for two different things! So it might be faster when it works! But as for build quality... phahh... rubbish
  15. my point exactly... if your not comparing like 4 like... whats the point!
  16. you trying to tell me its more efficient... OMG this old revving thing again... who buys an NSX to pootle about in? Its a "supercar" lol... its meant to be revv'd going over 6k is a bit too much? seriously... give me a break You'll be telling me next you can get a bootful of weekly shopping in the boot too... so its better still
  17. The VANOS system breaks ... if that isnt crude i dont know what is... 100k and your VANOS is gone and its VERY expensive to fix... VERY EXPENSIVE! This is the problem with BMW's they try to get 100 bhp per litre out of a naturally aspirated engine, its a one off, no other BMWS manage this do they? its nice, yes... great car yes... costs 47k minumum yes, and finally it breaks and needs to be treated like a ... god Nothing compares to honda's engine reliability and the fact they have no engine failures for the VTEC for what was it.... 3million units? BMW made a 4.0 V8 about 10 years ago for many years... this had a signifiacant design fault and the one we had needed a 7k engine rebuild, the fuel was leaking down the back of two cylinders and was only running on 6 cylinders after only 40k... BMW are not as reliable as you'd think. They kept this very hush hush and it was because we had the right contacts that we got this corrected out of warranty i wonder how many the dealers dupe into paying this rebuild themselves! SHOCKING Most of the company car drivers here can have BMW's but wouldn't have em, they prefer other cars after very bad experiences with them from NEW, contantly having to go back to the garage for warranty repairs.
  18. OMG your so blinkered... as i said i had a diesel for 18months... and the problem was the CONSTANT GEAR CHANGES if you wanted to be a lazy driver you had a 2k power band and if you was out of it, you wasn't doing ANYTHING, (no you couldnt take corners in third, no you couldn't overtake unless you was on the turbo power band. this was 2k to 4.5k, from 60mph in 6th gear your ok as long as you was above 1900rpm. If you wasnt above this 1900rpm the car was struggling, wouldn't accelerate and would have to drop it down to over take or simply accelerate on a motorway simple as that. The type R DOES have torque, you can put it on 6th Gear at 30mph and it will pull... FACT... it doesn't pull like a M5 at that speed in 6th BUT NOTHING WOULD at those speeds in 6th, not even a mitsubishi evo 9 FQ400, and im sure it would struggle to pull a caravan like a diesel, without a shadow of doubt, ill give you that one. if you did this in a diesel, it would probably stall... and you would look like a monkey taxi driver, hopping down the road. The power band/ torque in a diesel is EXACTLY as you have illustrated from 2-4k then nothing, the torque and power band in the civic is simply it starts low and keeps rising! nothing like you have drawn unless you started from minus 30000 rpm and went up to 15000 rpm on your scale... lol Just as a side note if your driving in normal driving conditions and you couldnt drive comfortably between 2-5k rpm in your civic then you must have been doing something wrong IMO or your car was obviously knackered. I can comfortably drive around between just 2-3k and its faster than most cars on the road between the same rev range, and faster than most above it . To sum up your position your saying its crap because it doesn't have ALL its power between 2-5k like a deisel... can i just say, at 4-5k rpm in deisel sounds like your trashing the car... 8k in the honda sounds SWEET as a nut! Have a nice day! PS let me know when your motor needs a new turbo, I know a good reconditioning place... or you could pay another 2k from BMW
  19. Oh dear jumping on the clarkson bandwagon,... assume ur going to be slating the 306 GTI-6 too and the XSARA VTS... both torsion Beams yet, was top of their class. I know the golf has the independant suspension at the back, and more power than the CIVIC type R... but as per top gear... and the STIG... type R was faster round its track ... In terms of ride it goes to the golf (but please drive one, it feels as stodgy as a sunday roast left in its gravy for 2 hours before serving), handling it goes to the Type R... DOES ANYONE BUY A HOT HATCH FOR THE RIDE QUALITY, NO ITS HANDLING and FUN? and the ones that don't... probably do the school run and have never been over 4k lol, and buy it cause it says GTI on the front/back... hmmmm
  20. OMG the ignorance in this thread and snobbery is shocking guys, Ive just brought my Honda TYPE R... its a GT model... 19k list price... standard, as it needed no other equipment! please look it up and price up a comparably spec'd up hot BMW 130M tech... with the same equipment... you will then see how they are so much more money after 3 or 5 years... THEY COST TWICE AS MUCH IN THE FIRST PLACE, then you have to SPEC them up too ... lol Residuals on Honda's are one of the best in the industry... but it doesn't bother me in the slightest anyway. As I said look up the comparisons, they include the BMW in the Topgear post from earlier, and the top car... HONDA CIVIC Type R GT, i made my choice, cause its what I wanted, no doubt the BMW is a nicer car, but for twice the money, shocking fuel economy, and NO CHARACTER... no thanks! M3 ... yes please... but for £50k... erm... NO
  21. Hey lets not get onto combined cycles here matey... the MINI cooper diesel ie BMW is quoted as 72mpg... on a car MPG marathon 2007 it acheived exactly that 72mpg, with skilled drivers trying to better it, other cars with claimed MPG of 55mpg got 72mpg... significant improvement. Agreed your using quoted figures... but im just saying they are B*****ks BMW are in the government officials departments pockets... simple, as their quoted figures are sometimes outragous, and it makes a huge diff on company car tax... like the 520d... with 177bhp getting on 134 CO2... shocking... sorry but they are in bed with authorities. Same accross the range... the Combined is almost the most someone has ever achieved, rather than realistic.
