  2. The argument from utility is morally dubious, and this can be demonstrated very definitively by asking... Should murdering someone of greater use to society carry a harsher punishment than murdering someone with less? Clearly if we are in the business of valuing people on the basis of the ease with which they can be replaced, then surely the legal system should have a sliding scale of punishment for murder depending on the utility provided by the person murdered.

  5. The typical rebuttal to such complaints is ,'you're free to find another employer', but that rings about as hollow as 'you're free to find another owner' would have to a plantation slave. Most employees have zero bargaining power, and the withdrawal of labour brings with it the possibility of imprisonment for failing to met fixed costs imposed by society. The cage may be larger, and the bars may be gilded, but a cage it remains.

Frankly, it's a credit to the work ethic that is ingrained in society that anyone will work for NMW. Financially, it's almost universally a bad decision.

  15. Strange that, isn't it? Also factor in how affordable housing is in Australia, and the minimum wage is probably more like £20/hr when comparing living costs to the UK.

  17. I'd go as far as to suggest that the employer/employee contract framework as it exists could well be challenged legally, given how almost universally prejudicial such contracts are. Of course this doesn't happen, because for some reason standards in contract law that are upheld in other areas of life, are disregarded when it comes to the contracts that exists between employer and employee. Just like with limited liability, the state grants businesses a dispensation, and armchair ideologues like Bogbrush and SNACR avail themselves of these protections, all the while calling for the few injunctions that exist to prevent further weakening of the position of employees to be removed. It's a hypocritical a la carte ideological outlook in which the actions of the state are criticised only in so far as they represent an obstacle to the further commoditization of human life.

  19. You may think that removing all benefits and doing away with the minimum wage is a great idea, but then I doubt you'd have to live with the consequences of that policy (at least directly). Arguing as you are that a minimum wage is causing unemployment presupposes that the problem can be made to go away by removing all wage controls. This position is not congruous with the cost base associated with living in a Western economy, and there is no way our cost base can be brought in line with China. Furthermore it is clearly the case that restrictions on what a company can do in terms of health and safety regulation, pollution controls and so on are an obstacle to high levels of employment. Do you think we should rescind all such legislation and let corporations do as they please in pursuit of profit?

  21. We already know your position, and its laughable moral inconsistency. It can be stated thus... You are entitled to the fruits of your labour, seemingly as a fundamental human right. Those that work for you are conveniently labelled as something less than human, and as such denying them the fruits of their labour can be justified, on the basis that they are nothing more than interchangeable components in your money making machine.
