  1. - and vote new members in. I think that with her considerable intellect, great wisdom and unparallelled experience in the world finance, the MPC could do a lot worse than Chantelle...
  2. Ah there's my nextdoor neighbour again - I knew you must be highly educated! Things will be different in a few years time.
  3. Yes you were - but you may need to work on your diplomacy skills!
  4. The biggest Cliff we've ever seen: Wish he'd go to the wall.
  5. Wasn't the geezer in the 'copter the original actual Barratt himself? Edit: Ok maybe not. A swift Google reveals that it was actor Patrick Allen.
  6. That Clottie is a piece of work. This statement: "Having newcomers ask basic questions, is so helpful, as it makes us more experienced folks really think about what we are doing, and why we are doing it !" - makes me hope like hell that her BTL portfolio evaporates into a stinking pile of negative equity.
  7. It amazes me that following the haitus about endowment mortgages - "Shock horror! the endowment policy might not pay off the principle! Jeepus! What are we going to do?", that lenders then turned around and offered (I/O) mortgages that don't even attempt to pay off the principle. Come the revolution, they will be the first ones against the wall!
  8. The IT industry / Indian workers issue reminds me of the british motorcycle industry when the Japanese started to build bikes. All the british manufacturers sat back on their laurels talking about how no one would pay low prices given the low reliability of the jap bikes. Then the japs made them reliable. "Oh sh*t", said the British bike industry and promptly went out of business. r.t. (sadly, also an Oracle dba)
  9. Does anyone know if the much touted £1.2 trillion debt includes those who pay off their credit cards in full every month? If the answer to that question is yes, then those people aren't really in debt at all. They are just using the credit card for convenience - and the real amount of credit card debt is about 40% less than stated.
  10. http://www.springhillrescue.com/rescue.shtml "Over the past few years, the price of horses has sky rocketed! Gone are the days of paying $500 for a decent trail or pleasure horse. In fact, now a days you can plan on spending between $1,000 - $2,000 for a "backyard" horse." Roll on the HPC! Ah sorry - thought this was horsepricecrash.co.uk - bloody Google!
  11. I have a direct debit to pay off my Barclaycard balance in full every month. I have to say that I've done this for about 5 years now and never had a single problem. They do take the DD payment quite a long time before the payment date though, so if you're trying to squeeze every last drop of free credit out of them, this is the disadvantage. - a Barclays employee stole my credit card once and went on a spending binge (true!) - but that is another story!
  12. Just to challenge that point - this was not true of the 89-94 crash. Actual prices fell by about 30%. It was in the prior crash in the early 70's when high inflation prevented nominal falls.
  13. Well even if it did - demand would presumably be reduced by the equivalent amount. If someone isn't selling, then they're not going to be buying either. There could be a rush to sell before the HIPs deadline resulting in temporary oversupply and hence reduced prices. The transition period is going to be interesting.
  14. But thats a right result for her isn't it? -and presumably this was the intention all along. She gets to keep half the money and her house. Is that legal?
  15. Well, you may think its a bargain but personally I don't: advertise - couple of quid per house vet potential buyers - so they won't send someone round if they don't think they're suitable? negotiate - negotiate what? - they just pass on offers to the vendor get the best possible price - see above monitor sales progression - what does that mean? - its either sold or it hasn't All this for an average fee of between 1 and 2 grand for a few hours work. Compare this with the solicitor who does some pretty serious conveyancing work for a few hundred quid.
  16. Over the years experience has lead me to the conclusion that anything with the word 'Agent' on the end stands for a worthless parasite that rakes in a huge percentage for providing a totaly unneccessary service. These leech-like middlemen (be they travel agents, recruitment agents or estate agents) could be totally eliminated from our society if only we could get the end parties to talk directly to each other. I guess it is a step in the right direction for the supermarkets to provide this sort of service - at least they would do it at a more reasonable price, but it would be much better to eliminate the middlemen all together.
  17. Interesting point that, and I think this is one reason why the HIPS (Home info packs) may have a larger impact than expected when they come in next year. The point being that the cost of the HIP has to be stumped up in advance, i.e. paid out of 'real money' rather than the 'funny money'.
  18. You obviously haven't visited the Costa del Wiltshire. Surfing, scuba diving, tropical sunsets, wall-to-wall bikini babes.....
  19. I thought they all shared the same bedroom! 'night John-boy.
  20. Verbatim quote from the canteen: "I've had my house on the market since the new year - not much interest. House prices are rocketting up again now though so if it goes on much longer, I'm going to have to take it off the market, get it revalued and put it on at a higher price."
  21. Hmmm - I reckon you must be my nextdoor neighbour, Leodhasach! Swindon is an unusual place. In many ways its like a northern industrial town (not saying thats a bad thing). This is probably the legacy of the train building industry. There's lots of nice countryside around Swindon, much nicer than Reading IMHO, and the surrounding area is far less populated. The transport links are great, especially by road, with easy access to the midlands and the north. I've lived near both towns and for me, the Swindon area is infinitely better. The Reading area is just SO busy. You can't even nip out for a paper on a Sunday moring without getting stuck in a traffic queue.
  22. £299,950 - that is a staggering asking price. The last three semis in that street sold for (nethouseprices): no. 70 £153,000 16-Sep-2005 no. 31 £250,000 20-May-2005 no. 48 £180,000 24-Mar-2005 So it looks like they're 'avin a larf.
