  1. I'm getting ticked off waiting for prices to slide. Whilst over the last 9 months I have seen prices slide slightly, it seems ever so slow. I know in 9 months I can continur saving and add 8-9K to my pot, but I'm ever so tempted to start going in with cheeky 20%+ off offers. Anyone else feeling like this or is it just lil impatient ol' me?

Downslides historically take about 5 years to hit bottom. We're all waiting. Be patient and don't buy.

  2. So I hear they're giving out free money in the UK. I'd like to get some of it. After all, who likes to work? Especially when you can make more, including dental and health insurance, than by working? Besides, I can work off the books for pocket money. If I get caught, well, they ain't putting people in jail for it anyway.

All sarcasm aside, or at least a bit, as I'm halfway serious, remember this: If you want more of something, have the government throw money at it.

If you want higher house prices, subsidize housing by removing capital gains taxes..

If you want more illegitimate children, subsidize them.

If you want higher college tuition, have the state subsidize higher education.

By contast, if you want less petrol usage, tax it!

If you want less crime, increase the penalties.

If you want less (fill in the blank) make it more expensive!

  3. you are using terminology to suit your own argument. They are a "couple" insofar as they are currently f*ck-buddies co-habiting. This may, or may not continue. If it does continue, and they choose to buy together, it is highly unlikely the benefits would continue.

Have you never co-habited in a rental place with someone who had debt, or was unemployed, when you weren't?

Wether you have, or have not, would you have felt it was fair if your financial circumstances were factored into their benefits entitlements?

How is Govt meant to distinguish between those who are merely flat-mates, those who are "temporary" couples, and those who are planning a long-term future togeter.... put cams all over the house and employ relationship psychologists to analyse?

That's why the government shouldn't get involved with this at all. But since it is, can I come to England and become a chav? Hell, the aforementioned couple on the swap show make almost twice what I do as a professional in New York. Sounds very tempting! What are the residency/citizenship requirements for aspiring chavs? :rolleyes:B)

  4. :o

I presume you are American and as I believe they are inclined to overreact to anything that breaches normality I am not surprised by your completely disproportionate response to the situation.

Yes, we in America do tend to get rather "ruffled" about anything that "breaches normality". What? No sugar on my oatmeal today? What? There's been a slight rescheduling of my child's music lesson? What? Fifty innocent civilians have been blown to bloody smithereens by the Religion of Pieces on the London tube today? What? Yes, we Yanks do tend to overreact. I take it you don't ride the tube. Not to worry.

  5. Organised religion regardless of sect is a dangerous thing. It has undoubtedly spread more hatred and bigotry than any other form of philosophy.

But what is wrong with it is not the religion itself, but the fact that warped individuals can use it to justify their own weird behaviour for material wealth or pleasure.

This applies as much to the christian religion as any. Look at the crusades! Look at the Nazis only a short time ago. We cannot single out one belief system as responsible, we must single out those warped individuals who use it to justify their antisocial views. These individuals would exist with or without religion and would simply find another belief structure to prop up their ideals.

For example the bible states in revalations:

"Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee."

An clear statement against other (non-jewish) types of religion. Which has bizarrely in the past been used to justify the holocaust! There are plent of similar ones.

Yet we are also told to:

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged.  For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."

they're (on the face of it) incompatible statements.

    The Qu'ran quotes:

"Kill them where you find them"

Yet also goes on to say in 109 The Disbelievers

Say: O disbelievers!  I worship not that which ye worship; Nor worship ye that which I worship. And I shall not worship that which ye worship. Nor will ye worship that which I worship. Unto you your religion, and unto me my religion.

One statement preaches love and acceptance the other bigotry - depending (and this is important) how YOU choose to see and quote them.

Your position is as insane as those who bomb us. Think before you post.

That's like saying we should have weeded out the "bad" Nazis in WWII. Islam is NOT a "normal" religion, but more akin to a Fascist Political party disguised as one. You may wish to spend your time sorting the good ones from the bad, but in the meantime, the attacks will continue. Where there's smoke, there's fire. You don't allow Nazis to organize and plot deadly attacks, do you? And if not, then why not? And as far as the Crusades go, well that was quite a while back now, wasn't it?
  6. Deporting people doesn't hurt them, all things being equal. There is a merciful way to solve the problem. Just make them move! That being said, there are lots of nice moslems, moon god worshipers. Nonetheless, do we want the fringe lunatic branch of it terrorizing us for the next 20 years, or, worse yet, taking over? It's high time for western civilization to get over its squeemishness and deal with the problem.

  7. You Brits have got to get rid of your Muslims. They will NOT stop doing what they are pogrammed to do, which is to kill or convert. Read the Koran!
"Make war on them until idolatry shall cease and God's religion shall reign supreme." (Surah 8:36-)

"If you fear treachery from any of your allies, you may fairly retaliate by breaking off your treaty with them." (Surah 8:51-)

"...make war on the leaders of unbelief...Make war on them: God will chastise them at your hands and humble them. He will grant you victory over them..." (Surah 9:12-)

"It ill becomes the idolaters [non-Muslims] to visit the mosques of God..." (Surah 9:17)

"Fight against such as those to whom the Scriptures were given [Jews and Christians]...until they pay tribute out of hand and are utterly subdued." (Surah 9:27-)

"It is He who has sent forth His apostle with guidance and the true Faith [islam] to make it triumphant over all religions, however much the idolaters [non-Muslims] may dislike it." (Surah 9:31-)

"If you do not fight, He will punish you sternly, and replace you by other men." (Surah 9:37-)

"Prophet make war on the unbelievers and the hypocrites and deal rigorously with them. Hell shall be their home." (Surah 9:73)

"Believers, make war on the infidels who dwell around you. Deal firmly with them." (Surah 9:121-)

"Say: 'Praise be to God who has never begotten a son; who has no partner in His Kingdom..." (Surah 17:111)

"'How shall I bear a child,' she [Mary] answered, 'when I am a virgin...?' 'Such is the will of the Lord,' he replied. 'That is no difficult thing for Him...God forbid that He [God[ Himself should beget a son!...Those who say: 'The Lord of Mercy has begotten a son,' preach a monstrous falsehood..." (Surah 19:12-, 29-, 88)

"Fight for the cause of God with the devotion due to Him...He has given you the name of Muslims..." (Surah 22:78-)

"Blessed are the believers...who restrain their carnal desires (except with their wives and slave-girls, for these are lawful to them)...These are the heirs of Paradise..." (Surah 23:1-5-)

"You shall not force your slave-girls into prostitution in order that you make money, if they wish to preserve their chastity." (Surah 24:33-)

"As for the faithful who do good works and believe what is revealed to Muhammad...He will forgive them their sins..." (Surah 47:1)

"Muhammad is God's apostle. Those who follow him are ruthless to the unbelievers but merciful to one another." (Surah 48:29)

  8. One possible side effect is already being seen by a few directors of recruitment companies I know. They are seeing a marked drop in applications for jobs in london, particularly where the prospective employee does not currently live in the capital (eg. graduates, overseas). They also inform me that they expect to see a rise in some salaries in the capital for certain areas and job types in an effort to attract in the right candidates.

So one possible side effect - wage inflation in certain areas and job types in the capital.

Whether this will be purely temporary will rest on whether this turns out to be a bombing campaign.

  9. I work in London and have to say that I truly hope that these terrorist attacks are stopped and do not continue.  If they continue then London could become like Israel and I can't imagine that there are millions of tourists queuing up to go there.  A sustained attack would affect tourism as people don't really want to go to potential danger zones (how many of you have recently booked a holiday to Iraq?).

Also it would have an effect on all sorts of business in London - shops, restaurants, cinemas, theatres etc etc.  I would also imagine that these terrorist activities will be knocking London Underground profits as from what I have seen loads more people are either walking, or cycling or driving to work now.  What is the congestion charge (in terms of price to pay) for having the secure knowledge that at least you aren't going to get blown up on the way to work.

Central London house prices and rents could increase in the face of a sustained attack.  However, I think that any effect on house prices would be more down to the overall knock on effect on the economy.  Add all this to an already struggling economy and it doesn't look good.

Personally if attacks are sustained I will have to take a view as to whether I want to work in London.  All the media is currently going on that people should defy the bombers, but tell that to someone's family if they got blown up.  I wouldn't go work in Israel and if London turns in to the same kind of scenario I would seriously consider taking some time out (Hey at least because house prices are so ridiculously high I don't have the issue of a huge mortgage to pay anyway!).  However lets hope that this situation doesn't go on - if it did it could cause terrible problems not just in terms of the economy but also in terms of race relations.

  10. Dunno about that. We got burgled a couple of years ago, the burglars had to make off with sod all other than a company-owned laptop and probably figured out that we're far too poor (aka have money in savings and investments, not cheap tat) to be worth bothering with again :).

Police were as useless as usual, of course. They can find a dozen cops to sit at the side of the road checking for expired tax disks to, according to the sign they put up, 'reduce crime and disorder in the county', but burglary? Not our problem, mate.

While I'm not so familiar with this forum, I am familiar with the fact that the diminishment of firearms rights directly increases the burglary rate.
