  1. Dan 1 - you are singing from my hymn sheet - Amen!!!
  2. Maybe - guess you'll find out when you get here! Hope your move goes well.
  3. Have to agree with you there. It does seem that, wherever you live in this country, you can't really escape them!!
  4. 10 days time and I am moving to the Isle of Wight! Fortunately the Chavs can't swim! Sorry, Hip to be Bear, you've got a big shock coming to you, then! You go to any main town on the Island and you will find chavs galore!!! We have one of the highest unemployment rates in the country and the highest level of underage pregnancies, so that should give you an idea of what you have to look forward to!
  5. Thanks futurepaul but I am a woman and strictly heterosexual!! All your comments are valued. We've been waiting many years to buy and haven't managed to save much over this time, due to having a young family and all the expenses that entails. I know buying a house isn't everything in life and I certainly treasure what I do have but it does limit your choices and gives you a sense that you could be moved on at any time - we'd just like to put down some roots and not have to feel as if we are heavily indebted in the process.
  6. How are hard-working young families supposed to get on the first rung of the property ladder if a) we don't get a decent interest rate on our savings for a deposit and if we get to the magic stage where we have a 20% deposit, the banks are only offering limited deals? There really is starting to be a divide between the baby-boomers and the rest of us who were unlucky enough to be born after 1970. We won't even have the luxury(?) of a decent pension when we retire!!! I can't see a way out of this situation and can imagine we'll be renting forever! I'm trying to keep the faith but it's not so easy.
  7. Dr Gloom I can't see what will be the catalyst for house prices to fall on the Island. It's possibly still a mecca for retirees and while people are able to sell on the mainland and downsize to live on the Island, property will still sell at these inflated prices. The estate agents are also marketing properties as second homes and it feels as if we are going the same way as Cornwall.
  8. Having lived on the Isle of Wight all my life, I'm at a loss to know why house prices here are above average when unemployment has recently been reported to be the highest in the area compared to the rest of the UK and the average wages are below that of the rest of the country. Also, I can't see that house prices are falling either. Anyone got any thoughts on this?
