The level of discussion on this thread from some posters is ridiculous. It makes the forum look daft, it makes the individuals look daft. What is it about the Internet that makes people mouth off in a very mater-of-fact way about something they know virtually nothing about? It doesn't happen in a pub, in the real world, I guess 'cos people don't like to look stupid. That same fear of looking stupid doesn't seem to apply to forums, how come?

I don't think we need to distract ourselves with ice cubes melting in the glass - everyone knows the deal. What's interesting here that this ice has been stable for a fairly long time so it's evidence that something has changed. The issue is the degree of buttressing provided to grounded ice. The grounded ice is believed to be able to flow faster without the buttressing ice shelves.

When house prices rise, land rises faster. When house prices fall, land falls faster. It's that simple - dig out the charts from last time.

Economic Crisis, Nothing Compared To Climate Change Problems
clv101 replied to a topic in House prices and the economy
Best? Are you being sarcastic? It's an awful 'documentary' which has been wildly discredited. Even Ofcom made an official judgement against it. It is not a good documentary. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Glo...Warming_Swindle -

White House Cancels Brown Press Conference In Rose Garden
clv101 replied to R K's topic in House prices and the economy
No I don't agree. Brown's an idiot, Obama knows it, we know it. What we don't need is more of the emperor's clothes. Call a spade a spade, we need straight talking. Brown does not deserve any "respect out of professionalism". -
AIG announced a $61.7bn 4th quarter loss, largest quarterly loss in US corporate history. Can't see that helping the market this afternoon!

When House Price Falls Officially Get Nearer 30%

Urm, yeah - it is. I would have thought that would be clear at least to posters around here by now. -
When House Price Falls Officially Get Nearer 30%
clv101 replied to Jonnybegood's topic in House prices and the economy
Absolutely. I see far too many people on HPC still talking in a business as usual fashion, thinking this is a recession like before and this a house price crash as before. It isn't. It's a whole new game, we, the country and the world have never seen anything like this before. The currency itself being abandoned could as easily happen as house prices falling 30% and no more. -
Germany Rejects Eastern Europe Bailout

Those are some serious numbers. Are they even approximately right? Are they comparable? Can you provided consistent, like-for-link links to credible sources? -
Hsbc Plans To Halt All Lending In Us

How come? Isn't this a good news story for HSBC? I'd like my bank to walk away from US lending! -
13% Of The Last 100 Houses Sold, Sold At A Loss
clv101 replied to ScaredEitherWay's topic in House prices and the economy
That saves a lot of effort! It seems that most houses brought since 2005 and sold in 2008 are selling at a loss - which is exactly what the Nationwide data is showing us. Should be interesting to see the 2009 data. -
That's wrong - I was employed in the telecoms industry in 2000 (year of auctions), and following boom years of 01, 02, 03... The only "recession in the telecoms development industry" I can think of was Marconi - nothing to do with the spectrum auctions though!

For sure. House prices have nothing to do with supply, demand, population, immigration, average family size, divorce rate, etc etc... house prices are wholly determined by how much people can afford which in turn is strongly dependent on their income (and how daft lenders are). The recent bubble (departure from income) has merely represented the increasing money supply through easy credit.

I live in Bristol and there are large differences between regions, Clifton and Redland at the 'nicer' end of town and Knowle and St. Pauls not being so good. This qualitative idea is quantified by the Acorn index, here's an example of a profile from 'nice' bit of Bristol: http://www.upmystreet.com/local/my-neighbo.../l/bs8+2qb.html And this area not so 'nice': http://www.upmystreet.com/local/my-neighbo.../l/bs4+2ll.html For Bristol I know the city well - however I don't know about other cities so well. Does anyone know of a graphical representation of this kind of information? Take a random city like... Oxford and overlay spatial information for income, interest in current affairs, satellite TV, instant meals consumed etc. The data is all in the public domain - it just needs adding to a Google Maps mashup.

Listening to the Today Programme this morning, the Dow Jones minimum has been mentioned at least every half hour.

That's a concern of mine. You can't possibly know that. It is possible for a total collapse, Soviet Union style.

It's only 'money'. Zimbabwe still as its land, its houses, its people, its natural resources, its intellect... 'money' really is the least of a nation's worth.

Fears For Gas Supply In The Big Freeze
clv101 replied to interestrateripoff's topic in House prices and the economy
Exaggeration? I think its conservative. Reserves in storage are at their lowest for years and the monthly forecast for February is for a 1-2C lower the average temperature anomaly. I think it's likely there will be shortages leading to disconnections before this winter's done. -
The National Grid Is Struggling This Evening.
clv101 replied to dreamOn120k's topic in House prices and the economy
What do you think about gas supply at the end of this cold week - and also by the end of February now that the monthly forecast is for Feb to be 1-2C lower than average (we haven't even had an average winter for several years). Current storage is the lowest at this date for at least 4 years. -
50% Deposits On New Build Required

Have you seen the material and build quality of today's new build? Infinitely long-lived asset they most certainly are not! -
Well all the supermarkets are already reporting record sales, their business is up. I can only assume its a mixture is people buying more supermarket food (less eating/drinking out, less takeaway, specialist deli), their expansion into 'Home' and the reduced competition as smaller businesses go bust. As someone else said, I bet the majority are low hours - maybe many will be second jobs!

Mortgage Guarantee Scheme, £380 Billion?!?!?!?!
clv101 replied to HAMISH_MCTAVISH's topic in House prices and the economy
Urm? There's no shortage of housing! That's the kind of rubbish a government minister would come out with. -
We're also a net importer of coal, gas, uranium, food, timber... not a bad con-trick we're playing on the rest of the world. We get stuff and they get worthless 'money'.
