  1. Cashback on council tax, utility bills and internet tv/package will almost cover the £5 fee, leaving you the 3% on 20k almost untouched, £40 a month after taxes. It may still be a good deal if you are fully utilising the cashbacks and keep your account topped up to 20k.
  2. Nobody seems to be mentioning the obvious alternative (although not available to the OP), having an offset mortgage. With an offset mortgage you can put any amount in your offset account and get the same rate as your mortgage, tax free. - No limit in amount (well your outstanding amount ) - No tax - Immediate access Obviously if you can find a bank that offers higher interest after tax than this, you put the max amount there, and the remainder in your offset account. If you pay off your mortgage, that money is gone, but in an offset it's available to you in case of an emergency.
  3. The people who complained about this the first time were spaniards themselves (the good citizen kind). I didn't mention this when I sent it (and I'm spaniard myself). But now I have a bunch of other spaniards (the lazy ones, the scum), attacking me for sending this to the papers.
  4. I have been away from the board for a couple of days, I can't believe that we made it to the news!!! Excellent!!
  5. There's no housing benefit as far as I know. There is "unemployment benefit" if you have been working at least for 2 years I think, and this benefit lasts for 2 years, and it's 75% of the salary I believe. Fraud experts there usually work and then spend 2 years enjoying the high unemployment income travelling, going to ski, etc. and having the good life.
  6. I'm reading more stuff about this Melanie business and it's unbelievable, they say she may be from social services.
  7. From here: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/moneytaxandbenefits/benefitstaxcreditsandothersupport/on_a_low_income/dg_10018926 She says she is studying, so this is probably fraud.
  8. You are welcome to propagate this story to the UK press. My main concern is not having somebody taking benefits when she doesn't need them and is young and able to work, my main concern is watching the spanish government encouraging people to do this as this was protrayed as a "cool" way of emigrating. You can search "melanie benefits edimburgo" and you'll see plenty of posts of the internet about spaniards talking about this "Melanie" person who helps them get all kind of benefits as soon as they arrive. I just read another story about 20 or 30 people meeting Melanie after they have just landed and applying for the benefits. Here is the story translated to English using google translate: http://translate.google.com/translate?js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=1&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.spaniards.es%2Fforos%2F2009%2F12%2F08%2Fespanol-avergonzado-por-espanoles-edimburgo&sl=es&tl=en
  9. Absolutely. And the program "Españoles por el mundo" is an attempt to get people emigrating to reduce unemployment. That sounds good! Payback!
  10. I sent this video to most UK newspapers, is there any other place where I can send a formal complaint about this sort of behaviour?
  11. Hi Here we can see how the Spanish media shows how to live off benefits in the UK. In a top audience program called “Españoles por el mundo” (Spanish people around the world) they show the life of a young girl who went to the UK to learn English after she finished her studies, and quickly learned how to get housing benefits and unemployment benefit (where she explains she only needed to work 1 day to get them). She pays only £60 for her center located flat in Edinburgh (the rest paid by the state, £500), and she also gets £60/week. She spends the whole day going around pubs, car boot markets, etc having a really enjoyable stay in the UK paid by the British taxpayer. I find disturbing that this behaviour is encouraged from a top audience program in the main public channel in Spain. Here you can watch the video (Spanish language): http://www.rtve.es/mediateca/videos/20091007/espanoles-edimburgo-jazmin-ortega/600696.shtml
