  1. My house of the week http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-57007537.html Far Cotton terraces have finally broken through the 200k mark. It only seems like yesterday when they broke through 100k. It's insane.
  2. I live in Wootton and sadly I earn considerably less than 80k. I'm not sure any of my friends in Wootton earn that much either. I know most of them don't.

I'm used to shocking prices for 4 bed detached houses but this is the first time I've seen a price like this for a terraced house. £350k for a terrace (although estate agents call them townhouses - I'm not sure what the difference is other than the lounge is normally on the first floor in a townhouse).
  4. I'm a bit bored, but still plugging away. I have two houses of the week this week. Firstly, a modest 4-bed detached in Hunsbury, with a garage conversion.   5. We're struggling to keep this thread going! Anyway, here is my house of the week: http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-36118425.html As usual, that's a lot of money for a very small house (2 bedrooms only upstairs). You have to walk through the lounge and the dining room to get to the kitchen. It's one of the houses where I don't understand why it's got a Grade II listing. It is, after all, just an old barn. I reckon Wootton and Hardingstone must more listed buildings per head of population than nearly anywhere else in the country. It seems like anything pre-Victorian gets a listing. That's not the case in most of the country is it?

  9. 210k for a 3 bed semi in Hunsbury http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-35165037.html It only seems like yesterday that you could get 4 bed detacheds for under 200k in Wootton. So, so, tiny. The master bedroom is 10'x9' and the 3rd bedroom is 7'x6'. That's more of a closet than a bedroom. They still manage to shoe-horn in an en-suite though One allocated parking space as well - that could get frustrating.

  11. My house of the week this week is an interesting flipper in Hardingstone. Originally list for sale in May 2014 for £240k, this eventually sold to a "developer" for in Feb this year for £234k. Here's the original listing, archived for prosperity on Zoopla: http://www.zoopla.co.uk/property/4-glebe-way/hardingstone/northampton/nn4-6dh/16417935 A very quick paint job and a touch of gardening and it's back on the market for an eye-watering £300k: http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-51814631.html Interestingly, Zoopla's algortihm is actually claiming that house has gone done in value since it was bought, so I presume they're are assuming there is currently negative HPI in Hardingstone. So what have they done for £66k? The kitchen has been replaced with what I guess is a more modern one, though the old one looked fine to me and the new one looks cheap. They've replaced the UPVC in the conservatory, from brown to white. And they're removed a huge amount of vegetation in the garden. The old garden looked really nice, with a lot of bushes. It looked like someone spent a lot of time on it. All of that work, all those years, have been ripped out and you now have a sparse, "low maintenance" lawn. As a gardener myself, I actually find it a little heartbreaking. Finally, take a look at photo 14 on Rightmove. A door handle. WTF?

  13. Hi Count No sign of the madness falling apart here in Wootton, quite the opposite - it seems to get madder each week. I am relieved I bought when I did as I'm not sure I could afford to live here now otherwise. I was surprised by the media generally saying that deflation is good for everyone, as it's bad for mortgages. Inflation erodes the real cost of mortgage payments. But I guess people don't care so long as the price of a loaf of bread and a pint of milk keeps falling. I don't really feel that I understand the world anymore

It is a nice area, but if you click the link on Rightmove showing recently sold properties in that street (what a fantastic feature!), it looks like similar properties sold recently for around 300 to 400k, so I have no idea where they got £775k from. I guess because it's shiny and new. Personally, I'd rather buy a 20 year old house with a massive garden and install my own kitchen than pay a 300 grand mark-up for a new house with a tiny garden and someone else's idea of what a great kitchen should be (which mainly seems to be a massive American style fridge, granite work tops and lots and lots of spotlights). But I know I'm in a minority - I also buy my cars second hand and don't have the latest iPhone.

  17. This is where HPC really lets itself down. We can argue that prices are unsustainable in the long run, and a crash will happen, but that is no concern to an estate agent. His job is to sell a house at current market prices. To get as much money for his vendor as possible. Calling them "wnkas" is just juvenile.

I find flats in places like Grange Park quite weird. When I moved to Northampton 11 years ago we lived in a flat for a couple of years in Far Cotton, overlooking the canal. I loved it. Close to pubs and restaurants and shops and things I generally liked to do when I was young(er) and sprogless. Not having to worry about a house suited me just fine and the size didn't bother me cos I spent more time in the pub than at home. But Grange Park? It is in the middle of nowhere and there is nothing to do. The only thing it really has going for it is it is good for young children. I couldn't imagine living in a one-bed flat there. People obviously do though, if that price is anything to go by.

I suspect the scrapping of HIPs has led to a rise in time-wasters.
  20. What a lovely, compassionate man Brian Binley is: "I have no issue with charity. My issue is that this increase comes at a time when the economy is getting better, it isn’t a case of there being more and more poor people. It’s partly because more and more people are free-loading. From a man of my background, that ain’t how you live your life" How he "lives his life", is claiming over 50 grand in rent payments from a company that he owns. From Wikipedia: "On 17 June 2009 it was revealed that Binley had claimed over £50,000 in expenses, renting a flat from his own company, BCC Marketing. Two months after beginning to rent the flat, expenses rules were changed to clarify that MPs could no longer rent properties from businesses in which they had an interest. Binley appealed to the Speaker of the House Michael Martin, whilst still claiming for the flat. Binley lost his appeal after two and a half years, during which time he still claimed for the flat in question. Binley has not had to repay the £57,000 he received while the Speaker deliberated." And he has the nerve to call people using food banks "free-loaders".
  21. I didn't think the program painted a very sympathetic picture of EAs. But that's reality TV - none of it is real. In my experience, the vast majority of middle-aged EAs and female EAs come across as decent, honest and hard-working. The male EA in their twenties and thirties, not so much so.
  22. Is that the house where someone offered 200k and the EA said to them "We're giving it away at £205k to be honest. If I didn't think it was worth £205k, I'd tell you." The buyer then agreed £205k and then promptly pulled out. Liars, the lot of them.

Yours for £285,000 The lounge is 9 foot wide. The family room is 7 foot wide. Spacious, huh? This is an ideal home if you have a thing for very long thin rooms.
