It’s bull. I found the case for donkey long country in my mums loft recently with the price still on it. It cost my nan £49.99 at least 25 years ago. Same with laptops. I’ve  had 4 or 5 mid range laptops (the the time they were out) in the past 10-15 and they’ve always cost about £500. This stuff seem to go down in price against wages...

You are paying for a steady increase in technology. The Donkey Kong game you buy today is not the SAME DK game from 25 years ago... (unless you are my mum buying her grandkids "the latest" must have tech... ;-)

  2. How about this for a sign:

Perform in Property with Steve Backley & Roger Black

    Quote

“We have learned that success comes from a decision to work towards a goal you are passionate about and one that you believe in. This is true whether it’s a sporting goal or in relation to the success of your property portfolio. Every step you take and every decision you make will shape your future. We want to help you make sound decisions, those that are right for you: aligned, clear and positive, in the direction you have chosen, that fits your dream.”

I know you all want to secretly sign up

  3. After years of neglecting the north in everything from tourism to restaurant reviews, for the last few months, and almost weekly, The Sunday Times (property section) has run "love-in" pieces about the north. This week it was Liverpool, ramping the city's BTL potential, but also praising it as a place to live, work and invest.

Other recent articles have lavished comment on the affluent suburbs of Manchester.

There is certainly a new message being pushed out!

  4. Interesting that many people (presumably not employed by Sky) refer to certain Kodi add-ons as "illegal" when in fact no-one seems to know for sure whether it is or not.

Sure, I understand that hosting or broadcasting copyright material has stepped over the mark, but receiving such, and crucially, not creating a permanent copy / file seems pretty grey to me.

I would compare it to standing outside a cricket stadium in August listening to a Beyonce gig (insert other artists as appropriate) without having paid for a ticket. Is this illegal too??

There have been dodgy Sky boxes doing the rounds for decades now, and I have not heard of a single person being dragged through the courts for watching an "illegal" episode of The Sopranos. Surely with the might of the media outlets behind them, Sky (News International) would have been shouting any such cases from the rooftops in order to scare the bejesus out of anyone considering it...?

  5. Errrrrrrrr - having lost my income because of rent/rates/parking issues (never mind the net) I can assure you that most current shopkeepers would agree with my views...........

Altrincham however deserves all the stick it gets.

Lets be quite clear here, I started commenting on "houses" not shops but if you insist we can carry on with shops.

Greed finished the shops in Altrincham. In my opinion it will be lucky not to end up like Whalley Range (which was "the" most desirable part of Greater Manchester in its day)

That is unless Landlords get real, rates are seriously lowered and all the parking restrictions are torn up. I have lived in/near Altrincham all my life. It used to be the only place I shopped now it is my last resort. I certainly would not dream of going out into Altrincham for a night out (not without a bodyguard anyhow)

Maybe we could carry this on in 10 years time (I believe that was your prediction) cool.gif

Just trying to find info on a house that was on the market back in 2013 (discussed on here) and stumbled across this beauty...Well, only 2.5 years into "my prediction" - lets see how I'm getting on...

Not that I'm one to gloat, but just wondering if "Bemusedmover" has been to Altrincham market hall on a Friday or Saturday night recently (and seen the ripple effect of success seeping out around it). What about Goose Green...? Tiki Bar is packed most weekends and still not seen / heard of any trouble yet. Perhaps seen any of the great little startup's appearing on the railway bridge over to Tesco. Had a coffee in the Little Deli Co, then seen a flyer for the Elk of Hale (paid for from the success of previous)?

Well I have done all of this...without a bodyguard... and lived to tell the tale that it was great! Roll on the next 7 1/2 years

  6. Having a cellar that only seems to be good for cultivating mould the appeal of getting it converted - which would probably require holes somewhere to get decent ventilation in - I can see the appeal.

You are right. Very, very difficult to create a perfectly humidity-neutral environment.

Need the right balance of tanking, ventilation and heat. Probably heat recovery extract units unless you want huge utility bills. I have had cellars that seemed dry and habitable, but still cultivated dampness / mould in paper items, fabric, leather shoes etc

  7. I thought you meant a different one but this not far away is still for sale http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-33992316.html

On a different note, I was shocked to see a house demolished on Hale Road the other day. Must be 80 or 90-odd Hale Road. Rather liked it myself but seemingly sold for development, couldn't find a sold price.(detached next to the bathroom place)

Had a quick look on the Planning portal... think its this (89 Hale Rd)

Erection of 2 no. 2-storey dwellings with accommodation at basement and roof level and vehicular accesses off Hale Road following demolition of existing dwelling.

Noticed another property nearby has had its gable end demolished.

On a side note, heard the other day a B-street property that had been gutted and refurbished by cowboys is now falling down... along with the two houses next door... cellar had been converted and they had undermined foundations / party wall

  8. !@%&%%£$ bet it had some character inside before they remodelled it. They say bi-folding doors bring the outside in.. unfortunately in this case they just open onto a small damp back yard!

When they remove their furniture and props, all that's left is the inside of a big white box.

A white box at risk of partial demolition every weekend if a careless driver flies off the road into the lounge wall

  9. So much wrong with THAT patronising Halifax advert...

Shot in the rain, the only black man, hints of abuse on the touchline from parents, ball hitting him on the head, van breaking down

Painting the main protagonist as this poor, down trodden man of the people who Halifax "rescue" in their warm, brightly lit, welcoming, high street branch at the end

The fact is that Halifax would be offering a PE teacher with a kid on the way next to nothing for a mortgage.

Anywhere near London and he'd be thrown out of the front door like the Fresh Prince of Bellair

  10. The Raj is becoming a letting agency! Just what Hale needs - an other property business to go with the eight already there.

Fantastic :( Was hoping for a cool Shoreditch style takeaway.. Caribbean chic or some such...

I look forward to walking past and seeing two bored blokes with gelled hair and the token "trophy agent".

  11. Anyone got any recent anecdotals about the local market?

Met a couple in Piccolinos last week who had just bought near Grove Lane, and said the competition was crazy. Think they said house eventually cost them £35k OVER the inflated asking price.

  12. Views on the new Booths? Would love to speak to the "not in my backyard" brigade who made such a fuss about the development a few years ago, and tried (thankfully unsuccessfully) to retain the inner-city concrete monstrosity that was "The Square"

Went to the opening "review" night, and came away with a few freebies (inc £10 in vouchers).

Obviously being Hale Barns, some of the guests had got spruced up as if they were going to Elton John's Oscar party.

Can see there being problems with the parking - limited numbers, very tight spots, and poor cul-de-sac design meaning you have to reverse back to the entrance from some spaces.

Inside though, there was only the booze, fish / meat counter, and frozen ready meal section that seemed to offer anything slightly different to Sainsburys / Tesco / Co-Op etc

  13. That was said many times last time. I don't buy it. They want power and the chance to feather their nests. Being at the helm when the economy implodes does not faze them.

Exactly. Think I've heard that claim at least twice twice on HPC forums for elections....

Its a Win Win WIn situation for anyone who gets the keys to Number 10 / 11, no matter what a mess they make of the country.

Remember, the real rewards come AFTER office.

  14. Beyond a certain sum that buys you the basics, the money / happiness link becomes a moot point, and what takes on more significance is the exposure to marketing / lifestyle aspirations / comparisons with your fellow man.

We live in a country where it is now impossible to avoid almost hourly self-analysis with the rest of the population - whether it’s a billboard advert, Facebook, TV commercial, friend off on holiday / buying a new car etc

For most of us, this constant comparison is the source of our happiness / unhappiness in relation to money, rather than the actual money itself.

What I’m saying is that if you could remove these elements from society, the desire to chase money and achieve the illusionary happiness we believe it provides would diminish.

  15. Stayed Saturday night last week. £133 for a twin room in the Mercure (Southwark) with breakfast.

So £67 each. Fantastic 5 star service from the mostly French staff. The breakfast (Admittedly fair 3 star quality) would have cost at least £15 each. So we're now paying about £50 each for a bed / shower / room / facilities for a night in Central London.

Parked company car (free personal fuel) in the Minories next to Tower of London. Nearly 24hrs of parking for £2. Yes, £2.

London can be cheap if you try

  16. Very good :D

Bought many years ago (B Streets, moved on since), but certainly not wanting to see prices rise any more. Would like to see my young kids being able to stay in the area, but at the rate its going, that will be unlikely.

Several more years of madness to come round here I'm afraid.

Only potential driver for a drop is the number of old folks living in big houses, struggling with the upkeep / bills, holding on for that bigger pension pot. First sign of downward movement and there will be a rush to sell.

  17. House prices in Altrincham & surrounding area are only going one way over the next few years.

Bus station, public realm works, apartments springing up that will re-energise a flagging town centre (yes, I really think they will have an effect), the new Hale Barns development, new road connectivity to the M6 etc etc.

Whatever you think of that dreadful Housewives of Cheshire programme, it is hardly doing a negative PR job for property prices.

Christ, even the Railway in Hale is starting to look like a gastro pub (from the outside anyway)

  18. Crossed wires?

    http://altrincham.today/2014/11/25/public-meeting-to-be-held-over-plans-to-erect-12-mile-eruv-boundary-around-hale-and-hale-barns/

The area is rather large bit I'm not sure it's a big deal. Presumably the Islamic centre on Grove lane is not a problem for the eruv.

First I've heard about this and I'm disgusted. What gives any religion to right to start erecting poles, fishing lines and other paraphernalia on public highways?

Just because their centuries old superstitions no longer "fit" with modern living, let's invent a "get out clause", that means we can enjoy our weekends imposition and / or guilt free. If anyone objects they'll no doubt be branded anti-semitic.

What response would I get from the council if I asked to pin tea-towels to every third telegraph pole to ward off evil spirits and ghosts?
