  1. Taking a long term view a lot of commodities (metals) are actually still very cheap. The price in the 80's was artificially low due in part to the breakdown of the USSR which released large stocks on to the open market. This low price meant mines closed and it was uneconomic to conduct large scale exploration. The price of many metals has not kept pace with inflation (in the long term) and it could easily be argued that they could increase much further.
  2. There was also a development of 5 bed houses just up the road that were for sale around the £1M mark. I think there were 6 built and all but one sold.   8. This kind of ties in with my "lunatics have taken over the asylum" post about fairfield which is just down the road from letchworth. There are some nice houses in letchworth which compared with Welwyn (and the asylum!) still seem to be "reasonably" priced.   9. Flats in a block just down the road from me went on sale from new in 2005 and I was astounded at the prices being paid. The block is in a terrible location between sainsburys, a car park that is used as a skate park and the railway line. One flat has been for sale for ages and is now under offer at £184,000 : http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-159...=1&tr_t=buy The lowest price paid in this block in 2005 was £250,000 http://www.rightmove.co.uk/action/SoldPric...ummarypagenum=1 So the minimum loss in 3 years is £66,000 or about 26% - in an area that has supposedly seen huge increases!
  10. I think the people trying to sell the 5 bed for £730,000 (reduced to £699,950) could have a problem as this one on the same road is on for £529,950: http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-164...=3&tr_t=buy I know not all 5 beds are the same but £170,000 difference on the same road!

  19. Nomad, I actually live in North London now and am amazed at the prices of some of the properties.
