  1. Look at it this way: At least France will be a much better place once the Germans are running it.
  2. His name is Dan Hannan. He's a Eurosceptic Tory MEP. Do you not remember the following from when Gordon Broon addressed the European Parliament a couple of years ago: What a star!
  3. A factor operating in the opposite direction is that housing costs are incorporated in the calcultaion of the RPI but not the CPI. Not all of any increase in the base rate will feed through to mortgage rates because not everyone with a mortgage has a variable rate product but I saw an article some time ago that argued that for every 1% increase in the base rate, there would be a corresponding 0.66% increase in the RPI (for 1 year only). It's worth a thought.
  4. Our chance to get rid of them will come when (if) Charles ever ascends to the throne. He's an idiot, apparently surrounds himself with sycophants and seems to believe that he has a God given right to interfere in matters that are properly the responsibility of an elected Government. If he can't keep his mouth shut when he becomes King, it'll cause a constitutional crisis that will, hopefully, spell the end of the monarchy. If, for some reason, the crown skips a generation to William, our chance to get rid of them in our lifetimes will probably be gone.
  5. This whole thread is completely misleading. Waddesdon Manor has been owned by the National Trust since it was bequeathed to the Nation in 1957, by the Rothschilds. The Rothschilds also gave a £750,000 donation at the time to help preserve the property for posterity. The National Trust allows the property to be administered by another charity called the Alice Trust on which a number of the Rothschild family are represented on the Board. They don't live at Waddesdon, although they have donated many £million over the years to help with the restoration and maintenance of the Manor. The property and its estate are open to the public. There's no public money being used here to "keep the Rothschild's in the lifestyle that they think they deserve" (quote from the OP). This whole thread is ridiculous. Edit: To correct a spelling mistake.
  6. I also wonder to what extent laundered drug money has inflated house prices in certain specific localities. Liverpool, for example, and Moss Side.
  7. Just think about what the Black Death did to land prices in the 14th century. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Death Perhaps those recent stress tests on the building societies that assumed a 60% falls in house prices were insufficiently robust?
  8. UK Government inflation statistics are entirely truthful and honest and properly reflect what is happening to prices in the UK economy.

  10. He's also giving away free theatre tickets. The 'repossessed' need more Shakespeare to take their minds off the fact that they can't feed, clothe or warm themselves this winter.

  12. As much as I can't wait to see the back of this dreadful, incompetent, deceitful, corrupt Government, I'm not sure that even an election in 2010 is in the bag for Cameron. See the following: http://www.labourhome.org/story/2008/9/10/1594/88949 They've managed to gerrimander the boundaries to gain a 2 million vote advantage. Electorally, the most likely outcome is a hung Parliament with Labour still as the largest party.
  13. Even though they are Labour, I can't believe that the Government is this incompetent. Do you think that Gordon is trying to crash the market deliberately in order to exact revenge on Tony (6 properties) Blair?
  14. Mods, Please can this be merged with the other Halifax thread. It's quite confusing to have multiple threads on the same topic.
  15. I found that quite humorous too! These press releases are becoming increasingly comical.
