  1. The PM and Home Secretary both look weak. These Idiots will prey on such weakness. London is like a giant classroom where the kids have called the teachers bluff and figured out he is powerless. The solution to London is the solution that would be needed in a classroom. The police need to come down hard on the trouble makers straight away. If they don't, they will gain further confidence and the trouble will get worse. This in turn will require an even harder response.

  4. eh, who's patprimer? I shall look up his work You lot will turn HPC into an asylum if you're not careful.
  5. If only we'd had the conservatives in for the last 32 years - all our problems would have been solved. Oh, I will enjoy my holiday, My favourite bit is the pay check at the end of August. Yummy.
  6. I've made my point, if you disagree, thats fair enough. We are all welcome to our opinions. I'm not going to get involved in a silly, repetitive argument. There is no right and wrong in politics or economics for that matter. I've got 6 weeks off work and I don't have the time to waste sitting on a forum all day. I'm simply making the point that a Conservative government isn't the answer to all our problems. I also think that many on this forum have become sheep. Rather than thinking for themselves, they just repeat each others right wing views without question. Its ironic really. When I joined this forum, it was a place where alternative views were expressed and free thought was prevelent. Its a real shame. There are some very interesting economic argument presented on HPC. Many people won't ever see these arguments, because the site has become so polarised by the right wing that more and more people steer clear. The fact is, Gordon Brown, for all his faults, is not the bogey man. It's naive and all too easy to pin the blame on one person. Besides, Gordon's not a patch on Thatcher when it comes to Evil
  7. Oh, there is a point in voting. I think that the little differences on where the money is spent are very important. I don't think different vote wouldn't have had much effect on the whole economy. The difference would be in how much was spend on the poor and how much was spent on the wealthy. Tax breaks or greater public services.
  8. Out of interest, how old are you?
  9. In terms of the big economic decisions, I'm not convinced labour would be that much different to the Torys. The difference will be in how spending is distributed. Tax breaks for the wealthy or spending on public services etc. I've already mentioned that Osbourne held up Ireland as a model economy. Do you really think that a Tory government would have kept the UK out of an economic storm that has effected the whole world? We live in a global economy, unfortunately, you can't just "go it alone". Its common sense to look at each party's track record and decide if they would have made the same mistakes. By your logic, we would all alternate from Tory, to Lib Dem, to Labour at each election.
  10. Being patronizing doesn't make you right and me wrong. I am aware of how shafted the 20 somethings are, I am one. How am I using children as human shields for my own greed? I am arguing for more money to be spent on childrens education, not on me personally. Do you really think that 16 year olds aren't just as shafted, if not more? I'm just locked out of the housing market. The next generation have zero job prospects AND are locked out of the housing market. It is the teenagers that deserve the most sympathy, even more than 20 somethings. Are you a 20 something by any chance?
  11. If wanting decent resources for the children I teach and those in comparable schools makes me selfish, then yes. Edit to add: Given that the younger generations have been coompletely shafted, I think the least we can do is offer them a decent education.
  12. If you believe that the Torys wouldn't have done the same or worse, you are very, very naive. With regard to war, it is ludicrous to suggest that the Torys would not have done the same. With regard to the economy, we have a chancellor who thought Ireland was an example of a model economy. The Labour party can't make everything better because the problem is global, and in my opinion a painful reset is needed. As for my personal politics - I'm a floating voter if anything - though having seen what the current government have done to my School's budget, I don't think I'll be floating over to the Torys anytime soon. I'm not naive enough to think that labour wouldn't have had to make cuts, but I don't think they would have been quite so brutal. It will take a long time for me to trust the Lib Dems again, so my choice is limited. In future I will vote for either a smaller party or Labour. Labour have many, many faults. But I believe the Torys have *slightly* more.
  13. Right...so because I suggest the idea that the torys are as bad or worse, I'm a war criminal? You're pathetic and you do those poor people in your images a great disservice by using them to your own political ends. I don't recall the Torys being against war? They seem quite happy in Libya. If anyone is a monster, you are for abusing images of injured children to your own political ends. Shame on you. Edit - to remove the pictures.
  14. Yipeee! Some people are starting to realise the Tory party aren't the answer to everything! Next step, the dawning that they are just as bad. In a few years, you'll all realise they're worse (well, apart from Si1 and top bankers)
  15. Si1, do you actually have a life outside of HPC? I didn't reply because I was working, I have been teaching today. Before you start making an issue of the fact I posted earlier, we are allowed a lunch break. With regard to Academies, you stated: What a stupid thing to say. I'm not sure where you get your expert knowledge of the school system / union reaction from, but its flawed. I'm a teacher at a school that is in the "fact finding" stage of academy conversion. So far I have had: Regular union letters about Academies in general for the last few years Speciific letters from the union about whats happening to my school input from the Head Teacher / SLT about what Academy status means Meetings with all five unions concerned about he issue Union reps sat in on all the focus groups during the fact finding process And you are trying to suggest that the unions have somehow let the issue slip? I know of a school near to me that is balloting for industrial action with regard to conversion to academy status. I'm not sure what more you expect the unions to do. Conversion of schools to academy status is done on a school by school basis. This stops the unions balloting for industrial action on a national scale, which is clever, I'll give you that. Academy conversions are, in many cases, done too fast, with too many unanswered questions. Some schools have undertaken conversion in a matter of weeks, from start to finish, with little consultation. I am fortunate that my schools governors seem to be looking into things properly. Pay and conditions is a potential issue, but it is by no means the main / only one. At the moment the scheme has not been thought through and could end up being worse value: Schools will have to pay for LEA services as they need them, but no price has been set Schools are responsible for the entire site. If the roof blows off, they are on their own fixing it. They will have to buy insurance of a school by school basis, which will likely be more expensive. There is no mechanism to bail out a school that goes under. They are simply on their own as it stands Most frightening, there is no mechanism for an academy to return t the LEA. Its a one way path. Why is this restriction needed if academy status is so positive? I could go on listing the unknowns, but you get the idea. Finaly, you stated that Gove is a great politician? He's certainly not a great education secretary. I have not met one person, from Classroom Teacher to Head Teacher that doesn't think he is clueless. Confidence in Gove is zero, at all levels. Gove's suggestion that parents cover striking teachers said a lot about how clueless he is. Even if he thought this was a good idea, he should have known full well that it could not be implemented. He just keeps embarrassing himself.
  16. I assume she will be leaving the union then?
  17. You shouldn't make assumptions about things when you don't know the facts. Academies are one of the main issues the teaching unions are fighting about at the moment. How many other statements do you make with zero research?
  18. You lot really do need to get some perspective if you think the BBC is pro strike. Such a discussion on here is the equivelent of getting a room full of Man U supporters, then discussing whether or not Man U are better than Liverpool. Anyhow, I look forward to the bashing I will get for having an alternative opinion...
  19. Some people on this board never cease to amaze me. News of huge cuts to the NHS and you welcome it because it *might* have a marginal effect on regional house prices. I want a house price fall as much as anyone else. I'm 28, in full time work, with little prospect of getting my own place. Be careful what you wish for, you might find yourself in need of state services one day. Now then, whose first to shout me down for not following the "unofficial" HPC line. Perhaps you'd like refer to me as one of the sheeple?
  20. Eh? You mean a police community support officer? They're full time paid employees. Perhaps you should buy your wife a highway code, it might be cheaper
  21. Lovely - Another bashing thread. I'm in my 7th year of teaching and have had 0 days off due to illness. In my experience teachers phoning in ill is actually quite rare. The truth is, in most cases its easier to come in and plod on through illness than it is to arrange cover lessons, etc. That said, if you're really ill, you're really ill. I have only ever known one teacher go off on stress. She was a head of year who over worked herself to a brakedown. She's now been back on top form for a few years, doing a fantastic job. As for they're only kids - this really depends on where you teach. How you can make a judgement on your neighbours sickness record, based on their car being at home, is beyond me.
  22. Its a bit silly really. Most of these people have got no chance of getting jobs. Take my girlfirend's parents. They've been on incapacity benefit for years. They couldn't do physical work, but could just about manage in an office. They'd both like to work, but have no chance. They've been out of work for years and have no qualifications. What chance do they have when we have so many unemployed graduate applying for the same jobs? What the government really mean is they are cutting benefits payments. I wish they'd just be honest about it. Its got nothing to do with getting people back to work. Its like the idea that we can all work until we're 70 to reduce the pensions bill. It won't work because there aren't enough jobs as it is!
  23. Just seen titles - year MMX! IGNORE THIS POST LOL wrong thread and I can't get the full editor to work for some reason!
  24. As above, I'd be interested to hear peoples views. I dared to mention at work that it might be a good thing. Apparently the majority view is that it is "disgusting"... Grandad works hard all his life, he's earned every penny, why should he have to pay tax on it again, etc, etc. Surely its needed to help pay for the massive numbers of retirees? Or perhaps that burden should fall entirely on the younger generation? I should mention that the people I asked were nowhere near retirement themselves.
  25. Not the brightest button are you? My name is TomLAD and its pretty clear from my prevous replies that I was a special, not a PCSO. I COULD have given you a ticket, unlike a PCSO.
