Stealth tax

A term used to describe a tax that is levied in such a way as to go generally unnoticed by the public. Such taxes lead to a breakdown in trust between the government and the public. A good example of a stealth tax was the £5billion per annum tax increase that Gordon Brown levied on pensions. There are reported to be 111 stealth taxes in the U.K..
