Guardian: Shard apartments unsold 5 years on

its difficult to know what to believe is the real state of the market, but this has certainly
been kept quiet..all starts in central london and spreads out historically.

The Shard has Qatari owners, and Saudi Arabia, Emirates, Israel and the US are shutting out Qatar for being too friendly with Iran. And Russian/Asian money is drying up. Or is it the stamp duty hike?

this from the comments:
"Council tax and rates should be charged on empty buildings too... at 10 times the rate.. that would change their owners minds about what to do with them and what rent to charge... and woukd bring in more tax revenue"

only of course it should be levied on the site value not the property value... I recall some story a while back about landowners gearing up to demolish empty buildings rather than paying some or other charge on them...

Unfortunately I don't think this is a signal that the property market is going down in general because these apartments have been on the market for years. It's more likely they were overpriced in the first place as the shard is in a poor location (south of the river).

Apparently it's so luxurious that you can get a maid from the nearby Shangri-La hotel to pop up and turn your bed covers down of an evening, I assume must be a euphemism for something else? I'm not sure which is more pathetic

In years to come it will be seen as madness that people stashed their stolen or tax-free offshore cash into real estate IN A JURISDICTION IN WHICH THEY DIDN'T HAVE A VOTE.

Brexit was, I believe, ultimately caused by the housing crisis which has also, apparently, causes the rise of Corbyn. It is a modern-day Peasants Revolt. It

Instead of aristocrats vs. serfs or robber barons vs workers we have the Offshore Class vs Onshore Class (and London versus the provinces).

The lesson of history is when wealth inequality gets beyond a certain level, politics snaps. That's where we are now but still this isn't widely understood.

Whatever, the Offshore Class is about to get a big education in Offshore Drilling.
