Telegraph: Britain's biggest landlord bans 'coloured people' because of 'the curry smell'

One of Britain's biggest buy-to-let landlords, Fergus Wilson, has banned 'coloured' people from renting his properties because, he says, they leave them smelling of curry. When contacted by The Sun Mr Wilson defended his comments, saying : "To be honest, we’re getting overloaded with coloured people. It is a problem with certain types of coloured people — those who consume curry — it sticks to the carpet.

And while we're at it, let's ban Coronation Chicken and Devilled Eggs - carriers of the dreaded Curry Smell!

But will he also ban poor white working-class people on the grounds they smell of stale beer, cigarettes, fish & chips or even deep-friend chocolate bars?

Or are some bad smells more equal than others?

Crikey what a stomach!

Old Fergus looks like he may have eaten a little too much Curry, or maybe a couple of late paying Eastern European tenants!!!

Disgusting. In the US they have specific laws against any racial discrimination in housing, surely there must be something for this here?

This was in The Sun yesterday (so it must be true) "Fergus Wilson, pictured with wife Judith, is believed to be selling his property portfolio for £250m"

mombers @4 - the Equality Act of 2010 is such a law but if legal action against him depends on such a weak-kneed body as the Equality and Human Rights Commission appears to be (why has he not been warned off or prosecuted for similar announcements already?) you can see why he can get away with this.

But how much of this Wilson saga is media invention? Certainly he has 'sold up' many times and as many times hasn't yet sold but is about to do so. TV should do a 'Keeping up with the Wilsons' weekly. It's easier to do than to report from the frontline in West Mosul.

@7 it seems that when it comes to enforcing tenant protection of any sort, there simply is neither the will nor the money...

Pusillanimity all round. Read the letting agent's comments at the end. 'We don't like this but we still want his business'. They push people through for vetting by Wilson knowing that he's going to reject them? Many/most letting agents require a prospective tenant to complete a form and charge that person perhaps £40-50 to check out the information on the form. You lose that money whether you're accepted or not. So the 'coloured' prospective tenant's money as well as his time is knowingly wasted.

Here's an idea for Mr Wilson. The tenant pays a large deposit up front. When he leaves if there's any damage or if the carpets need to be replaced or cleaned using a 'chemical thing' the landlord uses the deposit money for that purpose.

Hold on chaps.

Although I don't agree with the racial bias of this. I have visited a place where someone who used to live on curries lived (I don't think they were actually Indian).

Frankly the place stunk and the LL promised it would be "fumigated" before I moved in. Obviously I said for him to curry favour with me as a Tennant I would come back when he had done the necessary.

Look at the date of techie's post. Tennant's lager? LL not fumigating before showing prospective tenants around?
