Press Association: Young 'putting house plans on hold'

A record number of Britons want to be homeowners in the long-term but many younger people are putting immediate plans to buy on hold, a survey indicated. Around 85% of people said they hoped to be living in their own property 10 years from now, the highest level since the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) first started carrying out the research in 1975. But there has been a dip in the proportion of people who hope to be living in their own property in two years' time, with only 76% wanting to do so, compared with 78% three years earlier. The CML said the low number of young people who aspired to home-ownership in the immediate future was likely to be due to lifestyle choices, with them favouring flexibility and the ability to relocate easily in the short-term.

Still *really* not wanting to say that the cause could be high house prices.

'Around 85% of people said they hoped to be living in their own property 10 years from now', what a silly question, and those answering yes has gone up by 1 percentage point since the last time it was asked in 2007.

A story produced out of thin air and meaningless comparison of statistics and then Coogan blows his cover with the statement; "But the unintended consequence of regulatory change is that it is going to be permanently tougher for people - especially young people - to fulfil that aspiration in the future, even if they are responsible with their finances."

So those pesky young people don't want to own their own properdee in two years time, the self-serving, arrogant fools. Don't they know that properdee is a one-way bet? If they don't get on the ladder now they'll have no chance in ten years time.

And since when did a lack of hope become a lack of want?

Bit of a non-story I feel - 76% vs. 78% a drop of 2% well within statistical error in the sample groups of both surveys.

Septembers mortgage figures will be more revealing following on from last months drop.
