Dailymail: Police chiefs to axe 'double bubble' overtime in bid to cut £500m bill
The overhaul of pay and conditions leaked to Police Review has stunned the Police Federation which has warned that it will drive experienced officers out of the force.
The union says many officers already struggling financially face losing their homes if such severe cuts are put into action.

Well, just like everybody else, they shouldn't have constructed an entire lifestyle based on the "good times" carrying on forever.
If you over-extend, it's not your boss' fault or your employer's fault or even the government's fault. It's your fault. Period.

We went for breakfast at a restaurant where the 'seniors' special' was two eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast for 2.99.
'Sounds good,' my wife said. 'But I don't want the eggs.'
'Then, I'll have to charge you three pounds and forty-nine pence because you're ordering a la carte,' the waitress warned her.

always has to come down to the possibility of losing their home. I agree with sneaker. All of this "if you pay us fairly we might lose our homes" argument is garbage - they should have STR'd!

Husband Down.
A husband and wife are shopping in their local Asda.
The husband picks up a case of Budweiser and puts it in their cart. 'What do you think you're doing?' asks the wife. 'They're on sale, only £10 for 24 cans he replies.
'Put them back, we can't afford them demands the wife, and so they carry on shopping.
A few aisles further on along the woman picks up a
£20 jar of face cream and puts it in the basket.
What do you think you're doing?' asks the husband. 'It’s my face cream. It makes me look beautiful,' replies the wife.
Her husband retorts:
'So does 24 cans of Budweiser and it's half the price.'

In the good old days I was hourly paid, got time and a half in the week, double time at weekends plus traveling time and if I was working off company premises a daily allowance as there was subsidised catering back at base with a works bar for lunchtime drinkies.
Strangely enough it was a Great Place to work that produced in its day many great engineering innovations which started life on the back of a beer mat until it was decimated in the late 1990's.
Working life has slowly got less rewarding in many ways until I'm now working for a company owned and managed by a bunch of Americans who are the worlds biggest bull artists.

If they are really worried about losing their homes, why doesn't the police force just sort out some tied housing for them, like in olden times?

Let's face it, we don't have the finance for justice (never really did) only for the selected banks.
When the looting begins there will not be enough prison space so why do we need a full police force.
We are financing our own demise.

Thatcher started it all, they were part of the working class community and knew their place, before she tempted them with other ideas.
It doesn't take much for some. Now where did I put that coal bucket.

Who will stop and search londoners on the tube? Does this mean they won't have the resources to take the stop and search into the street in the light of day, rather than the cowardly, slimy, pretence that it's related to transport security?

Yet "overtime boosts police salaries by an average of (less than) £3,500".

A PC's pay at the top of salary scale is about £35K (£23K starting). The £50K figure is nonsense. I expect our disinterested Daily Mail is lumping in all the Chief Constables and Commissioner of the Met to get that meaningless figure.

All this with no qualifications, bargain!! - Most of them retire at 35 on health grounds anyway (with a broken toe nail or something.

Five years ago 100k was about right for a Met police Sgt who worked his/her overtime "right", particularly if CID allocated to an SO (special operations) unit...of which there are plenty. Sadly, not "nonsense" at all, rather a bit of an uncomfortable admission for quite a few people I know.

techieman (10) - what a misleading video. The guy in the flash Range Rover with tinted windscreens and an illegal numberplate (i.e. typical drug dealer vehicle) got pulled over by a traffic policeman for not wearing his seatbelt. The guy then ran over the traffic policemand and proceeded to evade the chasing police cars for almost 20 minutes before finally pulling over. They had no idea whether it was a 70 year olf in the car or a bunch of gun-toting drug dealers in their 20s, thanks to the illegally tinted windows. He had already run over one officer. What did you expect the police to do, walk up and ask politely if he would kindly get out of the car and not run any of them over this time?

i believe they stopped him once and he thought they had let him off (maybe thats stretching the imagination- but he was driving within the speed limit FFS.) i understood that they originally stopped him. And if he was a drug dealer and they had done that - the copper would have been shot! What couldnt they find out from his number plate who he was - and if it had been reported stolen even if you were right?
And if it was your old man? I have been the victim of crime on a few occasions and i can tell you they are absolutely useless. By hey thats just my personal experience. Then again there are some other that spring to mind - the scotsman with the table leg that they killed, Charles De M and of course Ian Tomlinson - or maybe they thought he had an uzi 9mm in his pockets?
Honestly - risible if it wasnt so sad. I personally know someone who was put away for 12 years in the 60 for something he didnt do as the police fabricated evidence and in those days a policemans word was it. Thank god we have mobile phones. Remeber what they originally said about Tomlinson? Nope thought not.
