Citywire: House building and the disastrous impact of 'Big Society'

This week, SmartNewHomes – which lists 85% of all new builds – took the opportunity to point out that the number of new homes added to the database has, for the second consecutive month, reached a record low, and to point the finger at Communities and Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles and his Government’s proposed changes to planning law. The Coalition’s policy on housebuilding is – certainly – not only ambiguous, it’s also, for the time being, missing. While the cost of development land is rising (up 20% on the year, according to Knight Frank), developers face radical changes in the system that risk making building on the plots much more difficult.

I welcome a policy of not building on the little green space we have left in our towns and cities HOWEVER this needs to be matched with a policy of expansion on new land.

I would love to know out of the X amount of properties build over the last 5 years how many are detached and semi detached houses with gardens? We have been building the slums of tomorrow, shoebox flats (I have seen some).
I welcome a sensable building plan of no new dwelling should occupy less than 0.75 arcres and be required to have parking facilities for 2 cars. Oh, and open up some green space for it as we dont't need it all due to intensive farming and GM crops!
I think boris johnson was suggesting near like this.. I know you can't follow this in london BUT minimum limits on size need to be set.

Pickles has always been a complete tosser and the sooner his diet catches up with him and he pegs out the better for us all.

One of the rabid right wing loonies who have come in undetected in this coalition and are wreaking havoc ... Jeremy rhyming slang Hunt is another.....

You will see many more as time unfolds. I have accepted this already, as I still recollect all those well meaning MPs.

It's not about politics for all anymore. The game has change in my opinion.

khards,

I don't understand why people are so set against flats. I know lots of young people who house-share in large four or five-bedroom houses. If these people lived in flats instead then it would free up houses for families. In the rest of Europe it's quite normal to live in flats.

If a certain type of person wants to live in flats and they do exist, go ahead. For families it sucks, big time.

Crunchy,

It's not for everyone. However from what I've seen, London has too few purpose-built flats and too many cramped house-shares and poorly-designed house-to-flat conversions. If London built more flats, it would free up houses for families.

That's what happens when land is limited and converting large houses into flats is more profitable.

Now, if those large houses were built on larger plots we may have seen more purpose built flats.

London being a classic example.
