Filth, hope and charity.

Guardian: The rich want a better world? Try paying fair wages and tax

I maintain that the real economic problems we face have their cause in inequality, so this article is not wholly off-topic. An interesting accompaniment to the discussions on interest rates. My view is that the extreme rich, with their inordinate power, seek to maintain low rates: it maintains the price of their many assets, and allows the continued transfer of wealth from the least well off to them. Philanthropy is another opportunity to exercise economic power as they see fit.

Relevance to HPC?

...and besides most of the accusations he levels at these philanthropists like, "Philanthrocapitalism, as it has been called, veers towards tackling symptoms of poverty and distress rather than underlying causes." and "business tycoons, accustomed to getting their own way, do things to the poor, rather than with them." could easily be said of the State when it provides welfare,

Just look at our previous Labour government it was much concerned with targets that only tackled the symptons of poverty ie. throwing money at the unemployed rather than getting them back to work and was often more concerned with its own social engineering agenda rather than making efficient use of taxpayers money.

Housing and their related prices have been a tool for quiet some time.

You are witnessing it now. HOW MUCH MORE WILL THIS COST THE TAXPAYER. It's a very old tradition.

Philanthropy has been twisted by the twisted minds of people (via foundations, science and medicine) that have been allowed to become

too rich and influencial by the easily corrupted.

Readers could either believe that statement, or think it's a dimwit regurgitating propaganda they barely understand. I’m keeping stum as to my opinion. on the probability – good manners demand it.

Calling me "need-a-kicking" is hardly good manners?

So you don't like what I said but you haven't actually come up with any counter arguments, just abuse. Now that is hardly the sign of intelligence either.

Associating Bill Gates with Philanthropy is akin to linking Jack The Ripper with womens rights. IMHO.

Do some research on Gates, you will find it of interest.

@ 2

So the fact that inequality, between rich and poor, actually widened under Labour would contradict the OP's assertion?

What level of in/equality is acceptable?

Seems this guy has forgotten that business is competitive - tax enthusiasm? - what is the government for? Seems also that this guy doesn't like diverse approaches to tackling the world's problems, thereby suggesting someone knows best, and dismissing opportunity for innovation. Utopian foolishness. Just as equality activists don't seem to like diversity in the economy, as if there is a magical balance to be found. If the world's economies were all the same, no diversity, what state would the planet be in right now, with every country collapsing? Diversity reduces systemic contagion and increases innovation.

The real choice is direct or indirect taxation, I favour the latter(...if you can afford it, pay - it's the decent thing to do). It's a philosophical stance, to present it as science is lying. To pretend that you can for ever reduce direct taxation, without ever increasing indirect, (and at the same time count on 'increased productivity' ad infinitum, to achieve improved value for money)....stealth taxes they are not.
It's just right wing rhetoric refined past Eric Blairs imagination.
Where's the new Dickens when you want him?

mockers movie :-)

Not much of a discussion provoked by this article, which ranges from the old party-political stuff (more and more irrelevant each day) to complete rubbish (from the usual suspect).
