Telegraph: Private landlords to slash rents to keep tenants because of housing benefit cuts

eco-house desire found this. Looks like the taxpayer-funded party is over for greedy landlords.

Good and about time too! The last government not only wanted me to keep my landlady afloat but wanted me to subsidise housing for everyone else on benefits too! Talk about spreading the love - it's about time the tables were turned!!!!

I've looked into this a bit further. Turns out there was a lot more detail to the housing benefit reforms. Previously the Local Housing Allowance would cover rent up to the median level of local rents (i.e. if there are three properties to rent, costing £200/£250/£300 to rent, then you were entitled to choose the middle one). Under the new rules you can only claim up to the 30th percentile of local rents - that's the £200 property in the above example.

well must admit msytie, I've been waiting for that to happen down in Brighton for a long time. I did think it was odd when our landlord offered for us to stay here at the same rent level as last year! I guess he's finding it difficult to keep reliable tenants that can afford to pay anything!
