"The building of affordable homes could potentially grind to a halt this year...."

BBC Business: Housebuilding could 'grind to a halt'

Housebuilders could be hit by a massive drop in the number of new homes built in the UK, a new report suggests. The National Housing Federation (NHF) said the number of new affordable homes built this year could slump by 65%. Funding cuts and changes to the planning system could see as few as 20,390 homes built, the group said.

Funny, you don't hear the BBC speculating on whether the UK's financial system might 'grind to a halt' or whether first time buyer demand might 'grind to a halt' or whether MG Rover production might 'grind to a halt'.

Ahh, but this is a BBC nationwide urgent appeal for more government money to be thrown at homebuilders so that they don't have to lower their prices because they are overpriced and no-one wants to buy them.

New affordable homes? Where are the existing ones then.

Yawn, all house building could grind to a halt if it ceases to be economically unviable for developers.

Noticed a few starting work again on some new flat units but doubt if they will sell as there are already 100's of vacant ones locally. Similarly with houses, a few developments building a few more houses on their sites, they are basically ticking over and it will not take much of a drop in prices for them to stop again.

So what if house building does grind to a halt?

1. I wouldn't want to live in a new shoe-box, with post-stamp garden, neighbours windows directly looking into your own. Or so-called luxury flat destined to become a future slum.
2. There's plenty of property coming onto the market in my area. Prices look to be coming down, and i'm sure if i were prepared to look yet, they'd take an offer. Some have been on for ages.

The Tory High Command will go mental when they read this.

"Wot? 20,000 new houses? Our target was ZERO new houses! Quick, slap VAT on new housing or something! And send Grant Shapps to a Gulag!"

The housebuilders have to build and more importantly have to sell.... once they realise all these wonderful ideas for pulling punters in just plain dont work, then they will drop the prices. Do you honestly think these businesses which have no cash reserves can survive even 6 months with mediocre sales. Building a house now costs little more than it did 10 years ago, just the land upon which to build it is more expensive. Most building companies have huge land banks ready to go, they will have to build affordable housing on them just to get some kind of return.

All houses need to be affordable - the sooner this phoney two tier market is put out of its misery the better..

..and MW, don't assume the 'Tory high command' are rabidly anti-development. Sick of Big Brother planning policy, certainly; and also sick of big developers being able to bully local govt.

But many of the people who have influence in the Tory party are landowners, and wonderful things happen to your personal wealth when your land gets planning consent..
