The city of Chicago privatised its on-street parking meters last year. They sold a 75-year lease on parking rights for $1.157bn. The cash was used to plug the budget deficit for a few months.
I'll leave it as an exercise for the reader to determine whether such deals can ever represent good value to the taxpayer.
