Mash: MORECAMBE AND WISE TO MAKE EVERYTHING MORE EXPENSIVE

The prime minister and his deputy charmed reporters in the Downing Street rose garden yesterday by opening with a haphazard musical number using a variety of everyday items that will soon be subject to VAT at 20%. Meanwhile Britain's funniest ever cabinet will meet for the first time today as Lib Dem and Tory ministers bid to make each other laugh with their chucklesome, knockabout policy programmes.

An extra 2.5% VAT and extra 1% Employer's NI will choke off the recovery very nicely (extra £15 billion coming out of the productive economy). But at least they are going to "freeze" Council Tax (saving teh 'hard pressed home-owner' about £1 billion a year)!

Thank you, Chuckle Brothers :-)

MW - normal tenants pay council tax too, so it's not so home-ownerist to "freeze" it.

MW - As per 666's comment. Also, they're raising tax allowances to 10K, increasing capital gains, so what's your beef? Not to mention interest only mortgages now having to be backed by a repayment vehicle... anyone would think you'd like to see prices stay where they are, or is it just that you're sad to see Brown out of No.10?

Oh, and the NI hike only affects those earning more than £45k, and if considered with the increase in the tax threshold - will mean only those earning more than £90k will end up paying more.

I'll opt for the Chuckle Brothers everytime over old Pa Broon. I wonder how his drive back up to Kirkcaldy went? I hear it's snowing in Jockland.
